Suresh Krishnani and Sunil Morpani were arrested in 2006. They were subsequently granted bail. The woman did not come before the court to depose despite several attempts made by the prosecution to get in touch with her. The incident was alleged to have taken place in December 2005. The woman accused the men of spiking her drink at a pub, kidnapping her, raping her in a car and taking her to a Vile Parle hotel before raping her again. It was alleged that when the woman regained consciousness, the two men allegedly assaulted her and she fell unconscious. The accused, both Ulhasnagar residents at the time, were arrested on the basis of the woman's description of them. The woman had come to the city only four months before the incident to pursue a career in the film industry and even enrolled in an acting class. She lived alone in the western suburbs. Over the years, the case was riddled with several delays. In September 2016, the prosecution informed the court that the woman was not traceable. The court then said: "It can be seen from the record that victim is a foreigner and she is reported not traceable on the given address. Hence, the special public prosecutor is directed to secure presence of other material witnesses." Among those who deposed were police officials, panch witnesses and hotel staff. The accused denied such an incident had ever taken place. The prosecution closed its case after the deposition of the 15th witness on July 4 last year. The court then recorded the final statements of the accused. Subsequently, the prosecution and the defence submitted the final arguments and the matter was posted for judgement earlier this month. Uncategorized Mumbai Crime: 2006 South African model rape case – Accused acquitted, as ‘victim’ fails to appear in court By Laytoya Thomas - February 29, 2020 12 Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Mumbai: A sessions court on Friday acquitted two persons who had been accused of raping a South African model in December 2005. The victim had not appeared before the court despite repeated attempts by the prosecution to contact her. She had left the country after the incident. The model had complained to the police that on December 27-28, 2005 two men had raped her. According to the police complaint, they had drugged her in hotel Bawa International near domestic airport, then raped her in a car, before taking her to another hotel in Ulhasnagar, where they had raped her again. The complaint had further said when she had gained consciousness at the hotel, they had beaten her with belts until she had fallen unconscious again. The police had filed a 200-page chargesheet against Sunil Morpani and Suresh Krishnani, booking them under relevant section for wrongful confinement, gang rape, causing hurt with dangerous weapon and administering drugs among others. Accused Krishnani’s lawyers had said they were being framed and Krishnani hails from a decent family in Ulhasnagar and was related to the owners of a resort in Lonavla. Morpani hailed from a well-to-do family and worked at a private company in the city, Krishnani’s advocate had said. In his bail plea, Krishnani had claimed it was a case of consensual sex and not rape. The court had granted bail on the ground the investigation was over, and the chargesheet filed. Hence, no further custody was required. The accused had claimed discrepancies in facts such as the time the model claimed she had left the hotel in the FIR and the time the hotel employees claimed she left it. They had also pointed that there was no sedative found in the woman’s blood report. The woman had come to the city to make a career in films. The joint initiative by Viviana Mall and the Thane police is aimed at encouraging people to raise their voice against sexual harassment faced by women irrespective of the onlooker’s gender. The film is part of a campaign called #MeraFarzHai and will be screened in 150 theatres across the city. The 1.54-minute film, made by Swagat Bhattacharya, showcases different instances of harassment that women face in settings like workplaces, buses and restaurants. In all the settings, while most of the onlookers stay silent, one person intervenes and confronts the harasser.‘A huge responsibility’Mr. Bhattacharya said the film is a way of doing his bit to change society. He said, “It is a huge responsibility. Even if one person who witnesses a woman go through something uncomfortable takes a stand, I will consider this film a success.”The film ends with Joint Commissioner of Police Suresh Kumar Mekala, Thane City, appealing to citizens to take action by saying that ensuring the safety of women is everyone’s duty.Rima Kirtikar, chief marketing officer, Viviana Mall, said there is a need to create awareness among citizens to come out and report incidents of crimes against women. She said, “When we reached out to the police, we were informed that a lot of cases of harassment go unreported. Sometimes witnesses do not report or intervene due to fear of what might happen to them. One of the objectives behind this film is to make people aware of the 103 emergency helpline.”Ms. Kirtikar said the subject might not be a new one, but they are trying to approach it from a different perspective. She said, “The Thane police have been instrumental in reaching out to theatres and other institutions to help with the initiative. As of now, the short film will be screened for a month in 40 theatres in Thane, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Kalyan. We have also planned workshops for schoolchildren from June and aim to bring this campaign to Mumbai as well.” Viviana Mall aims to hold a self-defence workshops on its premises and felicitate women achievers on March 7, the eve of Women’s Day. The event will be attended by Thane Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar. You have reached your limit for free articles this month. 2020-02-27Man murders 30-year-old roommate after he takes too long to open door in Ulhasnagar - Mid-day
The Ulhasnagar police arrested a 30-year-old man for murdering his roommate after he did not open the door of their room fast enough. According to the police, the accused Ramjeet Vishwakarma, 30, claimed the deceased Dineshkumar Gupta, 25, died in an accident, a Hindustan Times report read. Vishwakarma and Gupta had come to Ulhasnagar in search of jobs and lived together near Camp No. 1. On February 15, the accused and his neighbours called the police after Gupta's body was found in a pool of blood near his residence. Vishwakarma told police his friend used to drink a lot and probably met with an accident. At first, police registered an accidental death report and sent the body for post-mortem. Police said the post-mortem report said someone had hit Gupta on the head and chest with an object. During investigation, Vishwakarma fled from the area, but was nabbed by the police. “During questioning the accused confessed that he got angry as his roommate didn’t open the door for a long time as he was sleeping. In anger, the accused took some heavy object and hit Gupta on the head and chest repeatedly,” said R Bayes, police inspector, was quoted in the report as saying. The police booked Vishwakarma under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and remanded him in police custory till February 28. 2020-02-24Mumbai Crime: Ulhasnagar gangster may have been murdered, says forensic report - Mid-day
Four years after gangster Naresh Chaddi, 52, was found dead under mysterious circumstances, an FSL report has revealed that he died of 'asphyxia'. The deceased's family has been claiming since 2016 that Ulhasnagar corporator, Godhumal Kishnani had got Chaddi killed but no case was registered then due to lack of evidence. Now, the Thane police will finally register an FIR and start a probe. Naresh Aasandas Pahalajani alias Naresh Chaddi, who had surrendered in 2012, was a key witness in the murder case of Inder Bhatija and Ghanshyam Bhatija in the 1990s. A former associate of gangster-turned-politician Suresh Budharmal Kalani aka Pappu Kalani, Chaddi was wanted in 10 criminal cases in Ulhasnagar division, including a bomb blast. Speaking to mid-day, senior police inspector of Khadakpada police station, Ashok Pawar, said, "Chaddi's body was found under mysterious circumstances. An accidental death report (ADR) was registered. After conducting his post-mortem, the viscera and other samples were preserved and sent for a forensic analysis. We recently received an FSL report related to the matter, which reveals that he [the gangster] died of asphyxia." "As the cause of death has been revealed, we need to investigate why and how he died of asphyxia. We will register an FIR. His relatives, including wife and children, live in Bengaluru. The investigating officer is trying to contact them so that they file a complaint in the matter. After recording their statements, we will register a case," he added. Chaddi's death Chaddi's body was found on a sofa at his rented accommodation at Sai Paradise building in Kalyan's Khadakpada area in February 2016. His relatives, including wife Deepa, son Pravin and brother Raju, have been alleging since Day 1 that there were contusion marks and abrasions all over his body. However, the cops did not find any evidence related to the cause of his death. Godhumal Kishnani Chaddi's brother Raju said, "We are planning to meet the Khadakpada police officers this week to file a complaint and get the FIR registered in the matter." After the gangster's death, corporator Kishnani in an alleged threat call to a builder had claimed to have got Chaddi killed "like a dog". Builder Dinesh Jawalirani had got an FIR registered against Kishnani and his associate under Sections 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 294 (obscene acts or words), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. The vital tape On February 19, 2020, Raju wrote an email to the chief secretary and additional chief secretary in which he has attached a voice recording allegedly between Kishnani and an officer of Khadakpada police station, Sonawane, who was looking into the case in 2016. During the conversation in the tape, Kishnani is heard telling Sonawane, "Naresh Chaddi ko maar dia, kharcha aaya mera… lekin dekha na (I killed Naresh Chaddi. It cost me, but I got it done)." "We had also told inspector Sonawane about the threat my brother was facing from Kishnani and his son Praveen Godhu Kishnani, who are Ulhasnagar residents. Kishnani is a corporator for the municipality against which my brother had complained to the higher officials as they do illegal activities with support from the cops," reads the email by Raju. The email further states, "Inspector Sonawane, who was in-charge of the case, and other officials are involved in my brother's murder. I have a recording of the conversation between Kishnani and Sonawane in which they accept their involvement in my brother's murder (sic)." Raju added, "Kishnani and his associates are prime suspects in Chaddi's murder. We have been telling the cops since Day 1 but our requests to book them went unheard. Now, since the forensic report has revealed that it was not a natural death, the Khadakpada police must register an FIR against the suspects." Despite repeated attempts to contact corporator Kishnani and his son, they remained unavailable for comment. Naresh Chaddi's past A key witness in the Bhatija brothers' murder case, Chaddi's name shot to the limelight in April 2010 after a text message was sent to BJP leader Eknath Khadse and then Thane police commissioner, Anil Dhere, stating that the gangster was planning to plant bombs across the city. Khadse had raised the matter in the Assembly. 2012Year Naresh Chaddi surrendered to the police Feb 2016When gangster Naresh Chaddi was found dead in his rented apartment Catch up on all the latest Mumbai news, crime news, current affairs, and also a complete guide on Mumbai from food to things to do and events across the city here. 2020-02-21The dal moong sandwich may be Chembur’s best-kept secret - Condé Nast Traveller India
The dal moong sandwich may be Chembur’s best-kept secretJitendra Jarkani's sandwich brings all the Sindhis to his cart Share on facebook + Kalyan Karmakar Published: Feb 21, 2020 | 18:19:52 IST The Sindhi speciality: dal moong sandwich. Photo: Kalyan Karmakar You might have heard of dal pakwaan, the Sindhi breakfast of champions, but have you heard of the dal moong sandwich? It is a bit of an insider’s secret and is often served as prasad at temples frequented by Sindhis or sold out of carts located in areas such as Ulhasnagar and Chembur in Mumbai which have a high concentration of Sindhis. The Mumbai sandwich with a differenceWho:A dal moong sandwich cart that many Chembur locals vouch for is the one run by young Jitendra Jarkani. You will find him at his cart every morning, cheerfully feeding his loyal customers. He belongs to the third generation of the family that has been running this Chembur neighbourhood favourite. He took on the role after his father, the late Harish Jarkani, passed on. The cart was originally started by Jitendra’s grandfather, the late Bhojraj Jarkani, who came to Mumbai after the Partition, and started the business to provide for his family. Over the years, the humble cart that he started became a much-loved part of the locality that once gave him refuge. The late Bhojraj Jarkani, called ‘Bhojo’ by the kids who would flock to him after school, would cook the food himself. As did his son and daughter-in-law. Mama Jarkani still cooks the food every morning before Jitendra and his team get it over to the cart and start the business for the day. Such is the pull that Sindhis who have moved on from Chembur still return for the dal moong sandwich at Jitendra’s. The legacy of Bhojo is in good hands. What:The dal moong sandwich consists of a mix of dals that are sandwiched in naram pav and served. Three types of dals—green moong, yellow moong and channa dal—are slow-cooked individually in vessels called ‘sipri’ every morning. The sipris are then placed on the cart once the dals are cooked. The three dals are mixed together, when orders are placed, and the mix is then slid into sliced pav along with the green coriander-and-mint chutney, with raw onion added for astringency. The yellow moong is cooked in turmeric with ghee and a hint of black pepper or red chilli powder. The channa dal with turmeric, asafoetida, cumin and coriander. The whole green moong has some garam masala too. Like streetfood superstars the world over, the Jarkhani’s have their own ‘family mix’ of spices of course. At times a touch of aamchur (dried mango powder) is added for that extra zing.Good to know: Apart from the pav, the dal moong mix combines beautifully with the thick and crunchy masala paratha-like Sindhi flatbread called koki. Where: In the by-lane down Sattu Sweets at Chembur Colony, Mumbai. Ask locals or follow the crowd once there.When: 9am to 10.30am, or till stocks last NEXT In This Story: FoodMumbaiTravel Enjoyed reading this article? 2020-02-20Maharashtra: Orange flows the Waldhuni, just days after SC warning - Times of India
Maharashtra: Orange flows the Waldhuni, just days after SC warningTop Searches:Order TOI NewspaperShiv SenaSheena Bora Murder CaseCoronavirus in MumbaiMumbai FireMaharashtra: Orange flows the Waldhuni, just days after SC warningPradeep Gupta | TNN | Feb 20, 2020, 09:32 ISTWaldhuni river near Anand MIDC area gets a copperish, orange-red layer. Locals suspect untreated effluentsAMBERNATH: The Waldhuni river here turned orange-red on Wednesday along a stretch near the Anand Nagar MIDC area, indicating a high level of pollution. The phenomenon comes close on the heels of the Supreme Court rapping the municipal authorities for the deplorable condition of the Waldhuni and Ulhas rivers, both of which have suffered because of heavy industrial pollution over several years. Locals said a foul smell was emanating from the river and blamed the industries from the MIDC area here for releasing chemicals in the water without treatment. The Waldhuni and Ulhas issue had been in the Supreme Court for the past few years. In the first week of this month, the Supreme Court pulled up the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) for failing to meet its commitment to stop sending untreated sewage into the Ulhas and its tributary, the Waldhuni. The court was hearing a petition filed by an environmental group, Vanshakti. Data submitted in court revealed that the area under KDMC jurisdiction, with a population of 1.2 million, produces sewage amounting to 126 million litres daily (MLD) but treats only 30% of it. The untreated sewage pours into the Ulhas, a major river in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Ambernath Municipal Council, within the territory of which there are many industrial units, submitted in court that it was treating 97% of its waste. Kulgaon-Badlapur, a growing town, claimed to treat 90% of its waste and Ulhasnagar, 80%. A local activist, Satyajeet Burman, said the claims made by the authorities in the Supreme Court were suspect as it was regular practice for industries to release chemicals without treatment. “The officials from MPCB and MIDC have failed to monitor companies polluting the Waldhuni river in Ambernath, which in Kalyan connects to the Ulhas river, from which water is supplied to around 40 lakh people,” Burman said. The Waldhuni originates from the hills here and passes through Anand Nagar MIDC area and flows towards Ulhasnagar, meeting the Ulhas river near Kalyan. It is considered one of the dirtiest rivers in the state. The executive engineer, MPCB Kalyan Division, S L Waghmare, said a team had visited the spot and was making enquiries. Stalin D, founder of Vanshakti, said the NGO had taken photographs of the river and it would be complaining to the enviroment department and the Supreme Court in the next hearing. “Kalyan’s MPCB office, under the jurisdiction of which all these industries fall, failed to curb pollution,” he said. In 2012, Vanshakti had filed a petition in the NGT to direct the MPCB to shut all industries discharging untreated effluents into the Ulhas and Waldhuni. The matter was later heard in the high court in 2015 and is now in the Supreme Court. 2020-02-20Mumbai: Dadar’s 90-yr-old Prakash Mansion; Disaster in the making? - Yahoo India News
Mumbai: Dadar’s 90-yr-old Prakash Mansion; Disaster in the making?Free Press Journal20 February 2020ReblogShareTweetShareShareMumbai: Even as residents of a 90-year-old cessed building, Prakash Mansion in the main market of Dadar east, are clamouring for redevelopment, the landlord's grandson Dhruveer Singh Gandhi, 34, insists the building is not dangerous and only requires regular repairs, which are being carried out. At the same time, he admits, they have already approached some developers but as the real estate market is in a slump, they are unable to find a good developer. The ground plus four-storey structure houses a popular restaurant and bar, 'Great Punjab' owned by landlord Trilok Singh Gandhi. Residents in favour of redevelopment have accused the landlord of not being interested because he is "only concerned about his restaurant business". Devpriya Chakravarty, secretary of the Prakash Mansion Rahivashi Sangh and also an old tenant, said, "Personally, we do not have any issues with the landlord; we just want our building to be redeveloped. From 2013, we have been following up with the landlord on this subject."Moreover, whenever a builder comes forward, the landlord's demands are so high it makes the deal unviable for the developer. At this rate, no one will come forward. Because of this, today, tenants like me are living in the fear that some day our building might collapse. Who will be held responsible for it then? The building is beyond repair." Further, said Chakravarty, several letters had already been written to the government, about the alarming condition of the building but nothing has happened till date. This reporter was unable to meet Trilok Singh at the restaurant, as he had gone for a medical check-up but she was able to speak to Dhruveer, at the family's restaurant. He said, "The allegation that the landlord is against redevelopment is completely false. We are in support of redevelopment. But the reality is: No builder is coming forward, they say the plot is small, the locality is congested and the market is not conducive. I have letters from developers saying why they cannot carry out the redevelopment. I agree it is an old building but we have been conducting structural audits every three years. None of the audits has said our building is dilapidated, only repairs are required, which we are taking care of. While we are waiting for redevelopment, plans for which may take more than a year to materialise, repairs are being done."Moreover, Dhruveer claimed the tenants association formed is registered with the charity commissioner's office but is wrongly being portrayed as being representative of all tenants.Dhruveer himself is a tenant of the building and claims, the landlord's consent to form the association has not been taken. Supporting his claims, resident Hidayat Hakimzade, who has two houses in the building says the building is old and needs minor repairs, "like any other old building. After seeing instances of developers walking out of redevelopment projects over various reasons, we don't want this project to be given blindly to anyone and later, face trouble."However, another resident, Rajendra Mehta, believes the landlord is not allowing redevelopment out of fear he might lose business. He said, "For the redevelopment, the landlord has to shut his restaurant. They are concerned about incurring losses, I strongly believe they are not allowing redevelopment."Echoing similar sentiment is Edward Nailer, 70, who alleged the landlord "has greased the palms of government officials so the building do not go for redevelopment." He said, "We live in fear, as the structure is over 90 years old. The landlord is not concerned as he does not live in this rickety structure, risking his life.”Also Read: Mumbai: 40-yr-old stabs self to death in UlhasnagarReblogShareTweetShareShareWhat to read nextMahashivratri 2020 Will Not be a Dry Day: Alcohol Will be Served in Pubs and Bars in Mumbai and Delhi on February 21; Liquor Shops Will Remain ClosedLatestlyBengaluru SAP India employees test positive for H1N1, offices close for extensive sanitisationOneindiaUnable to Hail a Cab, Kirti Kulhari Opts For Rickshaw Ride in MumbaiNews18Sedition Case Against Woman Over ‘Pro-Pak’ Slogans at Owaisi EventThe QuintMEA gives details of Indians who were on board ship quarantined off JapanIndia Newzstreet MediaCongress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi to soon lose Indian Citizenship: Subramanian SwamyOneindiaSaif Ali Khan: Amrita Singh Was Never Compelled To Convert To Islam [Flashback]FilmibeatCoronavirus Update- Death toll in China climbs, 2 quarantined cruise passengers dieIndia Newzstreet MediaIndian 2 Crane Accident: Kamal Haasan Announces Rs 1 Crore Financial Help to the Families of the Unit Members who Died in the MishapLatestly‘I’ll slap you around’: Angry passengers square up to each other and shout abuse on Ryanair flightThe IndependentNirbhaya Case Convict Refuses to Recognise Mother, Suffers from Schizophrenia, Claims His LawyerNews18From Obama to Bill Clinton, these US Presidents have visited India beforeIndia Newzstreet MediaKate Middleton literally wore an Anarkali, know how you can get this lookYahoo LifestyleKaran Patel Says He Messed Up Badly; Adds He Used To Get Drunk & Report Late To SetsFilmibeat'Terrible and Horrible' , Sara Ali Khan badly trolled for her ramp walk at Lakme Fashion WeekIndia Newzstreet MediaRoger Federer out of French Open after knee injuryIndia Newzstreet Media
2020-02-17Maharashtra: SC pulls up KDMC for missing Ulhas sewage cut deadlines - Times of India
Maharashtra: SC pulls up KDMC for missing Ulhas sewage cut deadlinesTop Searches:Order TOI NewspaperShiv SenaMumbai FireCoronavirus in MumbaiManisha MhaiskarMaharashtra: SC pulls up KDMC for missing Ulhas sewage cut deadlinesClara Lewis | TNN | Feb 17, 2020, 10:35 ISTSewage from Khadegolavali area will be diverted to the KDMC sewage treatment plant which would enable another ...Read MoreMUMBAI: The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation treats barely 66 million litres per day (mld) of the 216 mld of sewage generated in its jurisdiction before discharging it into Ulhas river. This yawning gap between the required standards and the existing set-up is what prompted the apex court to recently describe progress on the Ulhas river clean-up to be “thoroughly unsatisfactory”. The Supreme Court, which is monitoring the rejuvenation of Ulhas, among the most polluted of rivers in the state, directed the KDMC commissioner to be present in court for the next hearing in its February 5 order. It noted that deadlines which were undertaken to be observed before the apex court had not been complied with. “We are categorically of the view that there has been a breach of orders of this court and the progress which has been achieved so far is unsatisfactory.” It directed principal secretaries of the urban development and environment departments to convene a meeting with the KDMC commissioner and resolve bottlenecks. It also appointed the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute to supervise the work The court was, however, appreciative of the work carried out by the Ambernath Municipal Council, which now treats 22 of 28 mld sewage and has upgraded 93% of its sewage lines while in the Ambernath and Badlapur industrial areas, sewage disposal lines are to be extended 17.5 km deep into Ulhas Creek. In case of Ulhasnagar, the court was informed that a 20.7 mld sewage treatment plant will be commissioned by the month-end and another for 15 mld will be commissioned by July. And sewage from Khadegolavali area will be diverted to the KDMC sewage treatment plant which would enable another 8 mld to be treated before being discharged into the river. While MIDC has been directed to file quarterly reports, the court said all affidavits for various municipalities are to be filed by their chiefs. In its plea before NGT in 2013, NGO Vanashakti pointed out high pollution. “On one hand the river is source of clean and pure potable water for cities like Navi Mumbai and Badlapur, on the other it is full of filth once it passes through Ambernath till Balkum in Thane,” said D Stalin, director (conservation), Vanashakti. 2020-02-16Sitdown Sunday: The oldest person who ever lived... or a fraud? - TheJournal.ie
Sitdown Sunday: The oldest person who ever lived... or a fraud? Settle back in a comfy chair and sit back with some of the week’s best longreads. By Aoife Barry Sunday 16 Feb 2020, 9:00 AM 10 hours ago 26,698 Views No Comments https://jrnl.ie/5006072 Share1 Tweet Email2 Image: Shutterstock/Ilya Andriyanov Image: Shutterstock/Ilya Andriyanov IT’S A DAY of rest, and you may be in the mood for a quiet corner and a comfy chair. We’ve hand-picked the week’s best reads for you to savour.  1. Airbnb scam James Temperton was in the AirBnb room he’d booked. Only it wasn’t quite the room that he thought he’d booked. Everything looked just a little… odd. So what was going on? (Wired, approx 32 mins reading time) I reply, explaining that this can’t be the case. In the photos on Airbnb, the kitchen had countertops on both sides. The kitchen I’m standing in has a countertop on one side only. There’s a hallway where there should be a solid wall. Heck, the whole lounge is completely the wrong shape. “Rest assured that you are at the correct property,” my host replies, before going silent. 2. The Last Garden In this essay, originally published in Winter Papers, Paraic O’Donnell writes about his MS diagnosis and his garden. (Irish Times, approx 26 mins reading time) And then, when S. had left, I couldn’t see straight to strip the bed, to bundle the sheets into the wash. Because the crying had started. I hadn’t even noticed, but when I did I couldn’t stop. And this crying, it was not fucking around. It wasn’t the decorous glistening you see in films. No, it was epic, this performance, it was unrestrained and operatic. This was crying in the high style, the heroic mode. This was a balls-out Wagnerian tempest of sorrowing that suspended all other functions and went on for a week. 3. Searching for Mackie A young woman goes out for the evening, and never comes back. Her family are still searching for answers. (Longreads, approx 38 mins reading time) British Columbia’s Highway 16 is a remote belt that stretches across the province to Haida Gwaii. Part of that protracted highway — 724 kilometers of it — is often called the Highway of Tears for the countless women, mostly Indigenous, who have disappeared or been murdered near it. Dozens of families who live around Highway 16 have been left to grapple with the pain of loved ones vanishing with no trace, several of them in recent years. 4. A paedophile writer is on trial The story of Gabriel Matzneff, a French writer who wrote about his paedophilia but who was allegedly protected by elites.  (New York Times, approx 13 mins reading time) But Mr. Matzneff has been summoned to appear in a Paris court on Wednesday, accused of actively promoting pedophilia through his books. Mr. Matzneff could face up to five years in prison, yet the case is also an implicit indictment of an elite that furthered his career and swatted away isolated voices calling for his arrest.  5. The oldest person who ever lived… or a fraud? In 1997, Jeanne Calment died at 122 years of age. Or was that really a lie? (The New Yorker, approx 43 mins reading time) At a hundred and ten, Calment was still living alone, in the Rue Gambetta apartment, where she had never bothered to install a modern heating system. One day, she climbed up on a table to unfreeze the boiler with the flame of a candle, starting a small fire. She agreed to move to a local retirement home, the Maison du Lac, until the weather improved. She ended up staying, and, in 1988, at a hundred and twelve, was briefly recognized as the “doyenne of humanity,” the oldest person in the world.  6. Tampon wars The battle to overthrow the giant that is Tampax. (The Guardian, approx 27 mins reading time) The Tampax team know her intimately. Like all big brands, they run a rolling programme of focus groups, talking to hundreds of women every month. They want to know how she feels about her tampon, whether she’s using it right, what would make it more comfortable, more convenient. They are led, always and exclusively, they like to say, by her needs and desires. What they don’t say, but is implicit, is that they are also led by the need and desire to sell more tampons. …AND A CLASSIC FROM THE ARCHIVES… A look at the lives of women in Ulhasnagar, India, who become gestational carriers. (VQR, approx 27 mins reading time) Sonali showed us a photograph of herself and her husband, a young man with brilliantined hair and a maroon dress shirt that was too big for him. He had died on the railroad tracks—a rumored suicide—leaving the family with weighty home loans. Sonali had already borne a child—despite her husband’s reservations—for an Israeli couple, in December 2012, for which she had earned 2.5 lakhs, or about $4,600, which had not been enough to buy the house outright. The accused have been identified as advocate Aarafat Hanif Shaikh (33), a resident of Sector 17 in Nerul; Mukesh Lakshman Prasad Gupta (45), a sales manager at ICICI Bank’s Old Panvel branch; Vinod Madhukar Bhosale (44), a resident of Kalamboli who runs a construction business; Javed Habib Ahmad Qureshi (55), a resident of JJ Road in Mumbai; Shrijil Mohanan Kurupambil (39), a resident of Dombivali; Ramkishan Lularknath Pandey (51), an exporter from Ulhasnagar; and Amitara Aurovido Mitra (61), a consultant from Santacruz with a degree in microbiology from Germany. The complaint was filed by the manager of ICICI Bank’s Old Panvel branch on February 8. According to the complaint, on February 5, a man submitted an application at the branch to change the registered mobile number attached to the bank account of Herbal Life International Pvt Ltd. The application had the letterhead and digital signature of the company.Later, another man entered the branch with a cheque of the company and sought to transfer ₹4.10 crore via real-time gross settlement (RTGS) to the bank account of RK Enterprises at Induslnd Bank’s Koparkhairane branch. After the money was transferred, Herbal Life International Pvt Ltd received a notification via email regarding the transaction. The company informed ICICI Bank that it had neither issued a cheque nor requested to change its mobile number. ICICI Bank then informed Induslnd Bank to freeze the transferred amount. However, the accused had withdrawn ₹4 lakh from the bank account.Ashok Dudhe, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II), said, “We informed ICICI Bank officials to inform us if any person visits the bank to enquire about the transaction.” A team comprising senior police inspector Ajay Landge, assistant police inspectors Nilesh Rajput and Ishan Kharote, and police personnel was formed to nab the accused. When Mr. Pandey turned up at the bank, the officials alerted the police and they arrested him. Mr. Pandey’s interrogation led the police to the remaining accused and the final arrest in the case was made on Wednesday. The police said Mr. Shaikh was the mastermind of the fraud and had been planning it for the past six months. Mr. Shaikh first asked Mr. Pandey to open an account at Induslnd Bank and then got in touch with Mr. Gupta with the help of an accused, who is still absconding. Mr. Shaikh paid Mr. Gupta and the wanted accused ₹10,000 each to obtain the account number and cheque numbers of Herbal Life International Pvt Ltd.Mr. Dudhe said, “Mr. Shaikh chose the company as it used to make many transactions and had a hefty sum in its account.” Mr. Shaikh then used details on the company’s website to forge the letterhead, download the digital signature and create a rubber stamp. He handed over the forged documents to Mr. Mitra, who submitted the application to change the company’s registered mobile number.Meanwhile, Mr. Qureshi procured fake cheques from Delhi and gave them to Mr. Bhosale, who passed them on to Mr. Kurupambil. The police said it was Mr. Kurupambil who submitted the cheque at ICICI Bank. “We are probing how the fake cheques were made. They even had the unique watermark due to which they were cleared. More arrests will be made if other bank employees are found to be involved in the fraud,” Mr. Dudhe said. The accused have been remanded in police custody till Saturday.Employee suspendedAn ICICI Bank spokesperson said, “We received a cheque along with an RTGS instruction ostensibly from the customer. Therefore, money was transferred to a third party account of a different bank, as per the instruction. Then, the customer informed us that it had not issued the cheque. Taking cognisance of the complaint, we immediately requested the other bank to freeze the account. While a fraction of the amount was withdrawn by the fraudsters from an ATM in Delhi, most of the amount was put under freeze with the other bank. This amount is available in the banking system. The bank has a zero tolerance policy for any act of indiscretion or fraud. The employee, who has been found involved, has been suspended. The bank has been extending full cooperation to the investigating authorities.” You have reached your limit for free articles this month. Khan is manager at a footwear factory in Bhiwandi. Thane: The Bhiwandi Narpoli police have arrested five persons, including a woman, and rescued a 30-year-old man who was kidnapped for a ransom of Rs 15 lakh. The victim, identified as Mohmmad Shakil Khan (30), was wrongly confined in a garage at Ambernath. Khan is manager at a footwear factory in Bhiwandi. The arrested kidnappers have been identified as Shagir Abdul Rehman Chaudhary (30), who is the prime accused; Abdul Kalam Khan (29), who arranged the vehicle to travel; Swati Mali (26) — all residents of Ulhasnagar; Wasiullah Khan Chaudhary, a resident of Ambernath who is the owner of the garage where the victim was kept, and Wasim Israr Khan (29), who tied up the victim in the garage. The absconding kidnapper is Salman (32). Both Wasim and Salman are residents of Pune. On February 5, the victim told his wife Asma that he was going to Mumbai for some work. When he did not return home, Asma contacted his factory owner and she was told that he had not gone to the factory. She went to the police station and registered a missing complaint on February 6. On February 7, Asma received a ransom call for Rs 15 lakh. The police then booked a kidnapping case. The kidnappers called her again for a couple of times and told her to arrange the money and get it to Kalyan. The investigating officer revealed that the accused used the victim’s cellphone to make the ransom calls. Police inspector Ravindra Wani said, “Based on mobile tower location, we reached the Ambernath garage. It was shut from outside. We called the fire brigade and unlocked the shutter. Shakil was rescued and one of the accused, Wasim, was held.” Later, Swati, Wasiullah, Abdul Kalam were also caught. On February 8, Shagir was arrested from Ulhasnagar. They chatted for three months and later he insisted on meeting Shakil. Shagir contacted his neighbour Swati she agreed to meet Shakil as the girl. 2020-02-11Mumbai: Govt approves 10 more Shiv Bhojan centres - The Indian Express
Mumbai: Govt approves 10 more Shiv Bhojan centres Mumbai: Govt approves 10 more Shiv Bhojan centres While a total of 10 centres were initially opened in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira Bhayander, Controller of Rationing and Director of Civil Supplies (Mumbai) Kailash Pagare said that 10 more places — six in Mumbai, one each in Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar — were approved on Monday. Written by Sandeep Ashar | Mumbai | Published: February 12, 2020 3:06:57 am On January 26, Thackeray had rolled out his pet scheme across 100 centres in the state. Buoyed by the response to state’s flagship subsidised food scheme, Shiv Bhojan, the Maha Vikas Aghadi government Monday approved 10 new canteens in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane under the scheme. On January 26, Thackeray had rolled out his pet scheme across 100 centres in the state. Within a month, 39 new centres have been opened, officials said. While a total of 10 centres were initially opened in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira Bhayander, Controller of Rationing and Director of Civil Supplies (Mumbai) Kailash Pagare said that 10 more places — six in Mumbai, one each in Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar — were approved on Monday. Thackeray’s Shiv Bhojan scheme, which was a part of his party’s election manifesto, and a part of the MVA’s common minimum programme, is Maharashtra’s own version of Tamil Nadu’s Amma canteens that provide food to the poor at heavily subsidised rates. In Maharashtra, Thackeray’s subsidised canteens run between 12-2 pm daily, serving a full meal including two chapatis, a vegetable bowl, rice and dal at Rs 10 to beneficiaries. The state plans to serve 18,000 subsidised thalis daily. Unlike Amma canteens, Maharashtra chose to run the scheme with the help of existing food canteens run by the government, women self-help groups, caterers near high-footfall areas such as government hospitals, government offices, state transport depots and industrial estates. Officials have said the scheme was receiving a good response from the public ever since it was rolled out.

2020-02-07Thalassaemia kids to bat for good health - Times of India
Thalassaemia kids to bat for good healthThalassaemia kids to bat for good healthTushar Tere | TNN | Feb 8, 2020, 04:17 ISTVadodara: Children and youngsters suffering from thalassaemia are usually advised to avoid strenuous physical activities as it may hurt them. But nearly 90 thalassaemia patients from across the country will break the myth when they take the field on Saturday. Aged between 14 and 24 years, the youngsters will play a cricket tournament at a private ground on Gorwa Road. A city-based NGO, The Wishing Factory that works for thalassaemia patients, has organized the event where the participants will play 20-over matches. “The idea is to send a message among thalassaemia patients that the disorder doesn’t restrict them from living a normal life. They can play sports and enjoy it,” said Parth Thakur, a thalassaemia patient, who started the not-for-profit organization. He works for welfare of thalassaemia and blood cancer patients. “As disabled children find it difficult to express their emotions, sports or any physical activity act as an outlet to their emotions and help them cope up with stress, anxiety, and depression. Railway termini at Panvel, Jogeshwari to get Rs 9 croreYou are in an offline modeRailway termini at Panvel, Jogeshwari to get Rs 9 croreBy Kamal MishraKamal Mishra, Mumbai Mirror | Updated: Feb 6, 2020, 08:29 ISTPrint this articleReduce font sizeIncrease font sizeShareWork in Jogeshwari will begin once the railways gets the moneyThe two stations are being developed as hubs of private train operations. Focusing on private train operations in the city, the central government allocated Rs 8 crore for a terminus at Panvel station and Rs 1 crore for a similar facility in Jogeshwari in the Union Budget. The details of allocations for the two projects were released by the government on Wednesday. FM Nirmala Sitharaman had announced 150 private trains in her Budget speech. According to sources, out of the 150 proposed routes, 30 will connect to Mumbai. The railways is planning to operate most private trains for Mumbai from Jogeshwari and Panvel, which have seen an exponential rise in the number of passengers. “We are also looking for routes that would cause minimum disturbance to the suburban section for which these two stations are ideal,” said a railway official. The official also said that the Panvel terminus is being developed at a fast pace and work in Jogeshwari will start once the promised amount is delivered. Additionally, the Centre has allocated Rs 5000 crore for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail project. However the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), tasked with improving infrastructure in the metropolitan region, has got Rs 28 crore less in this Budget compared to last year’s allocation. The MUTP got Rs 550 crore this time instead of Rs 578 crore last year. The decrease in allocation has been attributed to the government’s focus on railway projects within the city. “Apart from MUTP allocation, the Central Railway will get Rs 300 crore to improve passenger amenities. This includes Rs 4 crore for platform extension in CSMT, Rs 3 crore for Vikhroli road overbridge, Rs 7 crore for Diva road overbridge, Rs 30 crore for upgradation of Matunga railway workshop and Rs 38. 5 crore for the construction of foot overbridges at Dadar, Mulund, Vikhroli, Titwala, Atgaon, Ulhasnagar, Kasara,Ambivali, Vasind, Vadala, Govandi and Tilak Nagar stations,” said CPRO CR, Shivaji Sutar. This time, Western Railway has got gross outlay of Rs 7042 crore, which is 10.9 per cent more than last year, said Ravinder Bhakar, WR, CPRO. “It includes Rs 4.6 crore for safety works, Rs 37.80 crore for track renewals between Churchgate and Virar and Rs 9.82 crore for upgradation of signalling and telecommunication system in Mumbai suburban section,” said Bhakar and added that Rs 1.18 crore will be spent for an integrated security system in 32 stations and Rs 4.24 crore for conservation and restoration of Bandra station, a Grade I heritage structure. 2020-02-05Ulhasnagar civic body launches waivers on property tax penalty arrears - Times of India
Ulhasnagar civic body launches waivers on property tax penalty arrearsUlhasnagar civic body launches waivers on property tax penalty arrearsPradeep Gupta | TNN | Feb 5, 2020, 16:00 ISTPicture for representational purpose only.ULHASNAGAR: Giving major relief to property tax holders in the city, the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) on Wednesday launched 'Abhay Yojana' to waive off the penalty (interest) on property tax arrears with a pending amount up to Rs 1 lakh. The waivers would be given on penalty from 25 % to up to 100% from February 5 to March 23. The schemes will benefit poor and middle class property holders who are unable to pay their property tax for years. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have demanded that scheme's benefits should be given to all the property holders in the city. Sudhakar Deshmukh, commissioner of UMC, while holding press conference said, "If the pending property tax is paid between February 5 and 24, as high as 100% of the penalty amount will be waived off. If it is paid between February 25 to March 7, 75% of the penalty charges will be waived." Deshmukh further said, "Those who pay between March 8 and March 16, 50% waiver will be given while those who pay between March 17 to 23, 25% waiver will be given on the penalty". The UMC officials said that those having dues of over Rs 1 lakh will have to pay their entire dues and they can also apply for waiver on penalty through proper hearing on reason for delay of payment. This proposal under 'Abhay Yojana' was on Tuesday approved by UMC commissioner Deshmukh and Mayor Leelabai Aashan. "The scheme will help civic body to increase revenue as well as it will be beneficial for citizens who will get waiver on penalty on their property tax dues," said Rajesh Vadharya, chairman of standing committee of UMC. Meanwhile, BJP Corporator Manoj Lassi demanded that civic body should give benefits to all properties holders. If UMC officials are to be believed, UMC has property tax dues of Rs 487 crore from around 1,77,000 property holders of city of which around Rs 195 crore is only penalty charged on them for delay of payment. The UMC this year have set target to collect property tax of Rs 120 crore.
