Maharashtra civil polls: BJP bags 32 seats in Ulhasnagar, Shiv Sena 25 By Zee Media Bureau | Last Updated: Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 23:50 Ulhasnagar: In Ulhasnagar, the BJP grabbed 32 seats and Shiv Sena 25 of the total 78 seats on Thursday. The NCP got four, Congress got one and independents and others grabbed 16 seats. On the other hand, overall the saffron party scored a resounding victory in Maharashtra civil polls emerging as the largest party in eight of the 10 municipal corporations while finishing a close second to bellicose ally Shiv Sena in the latter's Mumbai bastion. BJP was the number one party in Ulhasnagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur. Shiv Sena led the tally in Mumbai and adjoining Thane. Making giant strides in the Shiv Sena citadel of Mumbai, BJP won 82 seats in the fiercely fought BMC polls, just two less than the estranged saffron ally, but both were well short of the magic figure of 114 needed to control the civic body. The hung verdict will reset the political calculations as no party is in the position to rule the country's richest civic body on its own and alliance seems inevitable. However, it is not yet clear whether the saffron allies, who share power both in Maharashtra and at the Centre, will get back together or new combinations will emerge. 2017-02-23Akola Municipal Corporation Elections 2017 Results LIVE News Updates: BJP wins 48 seats, Congress – 13 - India.com
Akola Municipal Corporation Elections 2017 Results LIVE News Updates: BJP wins 48 seats, Congress 13 By Uddipta Das Updated: February 23, 2017 8:54 PM IST Mumbai, Feb 23: The results of the Akola Municipal Corporation elections 2017 will be declared today at 10 AM. The elections for the Akola Municipal Corporation was held on February 21, that is on Tuesday. The Akola Municipal Corporation consists of 73 wards. In 2012, the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance won 26 out of the 73 seats. Stay tuned with us for real-time live updates about the Akola Municipal Corporation election 2017 results. Apart from the result of Akola Municipal Corporation elections 2017, the results of the rest of the Municipal Corporations, namely, BMC, TMC, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Solapur Municipal Corporation, Nashik Municipal Corporation, Amravati Municipal Elections and Nagpur Municipal Elections, will also be declared today. Akola Municipal Corporation, which is the governing body of Akola city, is headed by a mayor and following the 2012 Akola Municipal Corporation elections, Ujwala Deshmukh from the BJP was made the mayor of Akola. While in 2012, the Shiv Sena and the BJP were allies, this year the dynamics between the two political parties have changed to a large extent, and they are contesting the elections alone. In 2012, although the Indian National Congress (INC) managed to get 18 corporators, the allied BJP-Shiv Sena managed to get 26 corporators, out of which 18 were from BJP and 8 were from the Shiv Sena. The nationalist Congress Party, also known as the NCP, managed to get 5 seats and hence had 5 corporators, and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) got only 1 corporator in Akola. Apart from the candidates backed by political parties, there were 11 independent corporators elected. The recent spat in the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has brewed many speculations regarding which way the election shall sway this year, as looking at the Akola Municipal Corporation result of 2012, one can clearly see, the Shiv Sena as a weaker party than BJP, or for that matter the Congress. However, the mudslinging tactic of both the BJP and the Shiv Sena, might actually be detrimental for both. In the wake of this election season, when the BJP is also actively contesting Assembly elections in 5 states of the country, some have been speculating that Shiv Sena might actually have an edge over the BJP. 51.62 per cent polling was recorded in the elections for Akola Municipal Corporations held on February 21. India.com would be updating the results based upon updates and trends. The final tally of elected corporators is expected to be issued by State Election Commission later in the day.

Ulhasnagar results to decide fate of Kalani Jr Pradeep Gupta | TNN | Updated: Feb 23, 2017, 01.22 AM IST ULHASNAGAR: The civic election results on Thursday will decide the future of Ulhasnagar's strongman Pappu Kalani's son Omie, who left the NCP with 21 corporators and joined hands with BJP. The verdict is also a prestige issue for Shiv Sena MP Shreekant Shinde, who led the campaign in the city for the first time. The BJP, to defeat Sena, joined hands with Omie, and it is expected to get a majority. Senior BJP leaders were clearly dependent on Omie for campaigning for their candidates, as except for state minister Ravindra Chavan, no one participated. At most places, BJP corporators used Omie's face instead of their city president Kumar Ailani, who had lost the legislative elections against Omie's mother Jyoti despite the Modi wave in 2014. Political sources said if Omie gets a clear majority for BJP in a civic body which it has never ruled single-handedly since its inception in 1997, he may get some good position in the party or questions will arise on the popularity of the Kalani family in the city in which he once ruled the civic body. It is also a prestige issue for Sena's Shreekant Shinde, son of senior leader Ekanath Shinde, which has been ruling the civic body for 10 years with the help of the BJP and local SAI party. The Sena had 20 seats and to get a majority it needs 40 seats. Party sources said if the party gets more than 30 seats, and SAI manages 10, both will come together to rule the civic body. Both leaders for the first time led a civic election campaign. Earlier, Pappu Kalani and Ekanath Shinde used to lead the campaigns. The results will also show the popularity of SAI, which for 10 years has been playing the kingmakers' role.

BMC Election: In Ulhasnagar, corporator's two wives unite for poll campaign By Faisal Tandel Posted 2 hours Instead of playing petty politics over their shared husband, the two wives have united for the BMC Election to ensure their unusual family emerges a winner. Outgoing corporator Suresh Jadhav with his second wife, candidate Jyotshna Everyone's talking about the unusual election campaign of this woman candidate in Ulhasnagar, whose biggest supporter is her 'sautan'. The candidate is Jyotshna Jadhav (43), Shiv Sena's contender for ward number 13-B in the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. She is the second wife of outgoing corporator Suresh Jadhav (they got hitched around a year ago), who is still married to his first wife, Sunita. Suresh Jadhav First Wife Sunita. Instead of playing petty politics over their shared husband, however, Sunita is going all out to support Jyotshna, and is going around town with a very unusual request: "She is my husband's second wife, please vote for her." The news of two wives on one field has spread across social networking sites, and has caught the attention of voters, who find this show of unity both funny and remarkable. Convenient arrangement: The arrangement has worked out conveniently for the husband, Suresh, who was the local corporator (also Shiv Sena) for 20 years. This time round, the ward has been reserved for women. The ward is also reserved for OBC (Other Backward Class) candidates. Sources said that since Sunita is from the open category, Suresh enrolled Jyotshna - who is from the OBC background - for the election instead. But Sunita holds no grudge. "Jyotshna and I are on good terms with each other, and the motive behind this campaign is to show the voters that we are a family," she told mid-day. 'For the public'Suresh added, "Yes, my wife Sunita is campaigning for Jyotshna. We don't have any dispute among ourselves and, at the end, we are doing it for the welfare of the public. I was elected from this ward for 20 years, and will see that my wife too is elected in the upcoming polls." Sources said that Suresh put in a lot of effort to ensure that his wife got a ticket, as many were opposed to the idea. But with the help of senior party leaders, and the work he had done for the public, he got his wish. Jyotshna, who has been involved in social work for several years, said, "We are working for the public and unity is our first motive."

Modi-Pappu rub shoulders on posters in Ulhasnagar THE ASIAN AGE. Published: Feb 9, 2017, 1:51 am IST Updated: Feb 9, 2017, 6:51 am IST Mumbai: In a major embarrassment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), posters with photos of Pappu Kalani, a convicted criminal, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been mushroomed all over Ulhasnagar. The saffron party faced flak for forming an alliance with Pappu Kalani's son Omi Kalani in the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC). The BJP had tried to save face saying it is going with Omi Kalani, and not his father. The BJP had made serious allegations against Pappu Kalani in the 80s for his criminal record, but the party in the last week of January forged an alliance with Kalani, an outfit to promote the leader in politics, allotting it almost 28 seats in the UMC. At the time of the tie-up, BJP minister of state Ravindra Chavan, who is the party in-charge for the UMC polls, had told the media that his party was sealing a deal with a new generation leader. It may be mentioned here that Pappu Kalani had contested the 1986 Assembly elections on a Congress ticket when then-Congress leader Sharad Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party supremo, was chief minister. Mr Kalani was booked for the murder of BJP activist Inder Bhateja and few others. In 1993 he was among the first persons who were booked under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA). The then-Opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly Gopinath Munde, a BJP stalwart, had accused Mr Pawar of criminalising politics in state, citing Pappu Kalani's example. When asked about the poster, BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari said, Certainly, a BJP candidate wouldn't have done that. If any candidate from our alliance used it (the picture), we will instruct them not to use any pictures apart from those of the PM and CM.

Marathi vs Sindhi in Ulhasnagar elections The BJP, an alliance partner with the Sena in the corporation, has now tied up with the Ulhasnagar strongman and NCP leader Pappu Kalani's son Omi for the civic polls. Written by Vishwas Waghmode | Mumbai | Published:February 9, 2017 2:40 am IN the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, the Shiv Sena is likely to play the Marathi card to corner Omi Kalani and the BJP, which are heavily banking on the Sindhi community. Of the 78 corporator seats, around 40 are dominated by the Sindhi community, in which the Sena doesn't have a strong presence. Watch What Else is Making News The BJP, an alliance partner with the Sena in the corporation, has now tied up with the Ulhasnagar strongman and NCP leader Pappu Kalani's son Omi for the civic polls. Supporters of Omi claim the support of around 24 corporators. At present, Sena has 23 corporators while the BJP has 12. Others include two corporators from the Ramdas Athavale-led RPI and six independents. Sena leaders said they plan to corner the Omi camp and the BJP by playing the Marathi card and highlighting the BJP's attempts to tie up with a leader with alleged criminal background. Gopal Landge, senior Sena leader, said the party will give tickets to candidates from the Sindhi community. We have fielded over 17 Sindhi candidates and will also focus on development agenda, said Landge. But the Omi camp and BJP too have plans to thwart the Sena's attempts. More than 45 per cent candidates will be non-Sindhis such as Dalits, Muslims, Bengalis and Punjabis. So, this Marathi card will not work much, said a Omi supporter. Kapil Patil, MP and Thane district president of BJP, said the BJP will focus on development agenda. By playing the Marathi card, the Sena is polarising the polls. While they now question our tie-up with Kalani over his criminal background, the Sena took his support for the legislative council polls. It shows their double-standards, said Patil.

2017-02-0113-year-old killed by celebratory fire at boy's naming ceremony - Times of India
13-year-old killed by celebratory fire at boy’s naming ceremony Pradeep Gupta | TNN | Updated: Feb 2, 2017, 10.55 AM IST KALYAN: Celebrations over a five-day-old boy's naming ceremony cost a 13-year-old boy his life in Ulhasnagar. A reportedly drunk guest at the event fired in the air but the bullet hit a teen, Pratik Gaikwad, who succumbed to his injuries later during treatment. Incidents of such celebratory firing are rare in the state. After the incident, on the basis of information provided by eyewitnesses, the Shivaji Nagar police on Wednesday arrested three suspects including a former corporator Kabir Gaikwad (30), Aadesh Gaikwad (25) and his brother Ashish Gaikwad (21) while the hunt is on for Satyajeet Gaikwad (28), who organised the event. CCTV footage of the incident was found to be destroyed, which police said they believe may have been done by Satyajeet to shield his guests. Satyajeet and the other accused, who are his friends, are residents of Chinchpada area in Ambernath while Satyajeet's in-laws live in Gaikwadpada village, in Ulhasnagar. Police said Satyajeet's wife gave birth to a boy five days ago and on Tuesday night, he organised the naming ceremony at his in-laws' place in Ulhasnagar. After the naming ceremony, guests at the party were having alcohol and dancing to the DJ's tunes when Pratik, who lived nearby, was drawn to the event by the music. Police suspect around 12am, either Kabir, Ashok or his brother Ashish fired in the air but the bullet hit Pratik on the chest. Locals rushed Pratik to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar, where during treatment he died at around 2am. His parents were not informed immediately and only told about the incident after he succumbed to his injuries. Pratik's father Bhaskar is a daily wage labourer while his mother works as a maid. Pratik, who studied in Class VI, has two sisters. Talking to reporters, Bhaskar said, "I want those who killed my son to be punished." Sunil Bhardwaj, deputy commissioner of police (zone-III) of Thane police said, "Our team managed to nab three accused, one of whom is believed to have fired the weapon. There was CCTV footage of the event but the organiser deliberately destroyed it, so a hunt is on for him and we have also booked the four for conspiracy." Police booked all four accused under IPC sections 302(murder), 201(conspiracy) and 34(common intention) and sections related to the Arms Act. However, the arrested trio is yet to reveal anything on who fired the revolver. Police said they suspect the revolver belongs to the ex-corporator and a probe is on to ascertain the same. A few years back Kabir's father Naresh, also a corporator, was killed over a political rivalry, which Kabir had cited to get a licence for the weapon. The incident exposed the failure of the police to take pre-emptive action, as music at the event was on well beyond the court-stipulated deadline of 10pm. Moreover, the election code of conduct is in force in Ulhasnagar, due to the upcoming civic elections, which bars carrying any weapons within the city limits.
