The body of Laxmi Narayan Kakkad (62) was found in Matheran ghats, about 85 kms from here, yesterday, an officer with Nehru Nagar police station said. According to police, Kakkad left home last Monday at about 11 AM for some work but did not return home. His wife and son searched for him but in vain, following which a missing person complaint was registered on Monday evening at Nehru Nagar police station here. Meanwhile, the family gave an advertisement with Kakkad's photo in newspapers on Friday. At about 11 AM yesterday, they received a phone call from an Ulhasnagar-based man, who claimed to have seen a dead body resembling Kakkad. "The man who gave us information claimed he received a photo of a dead body through a WhatsApp message on cell phone last Tuesday that was being circulated in various groups on the app. On finding similarities between picture of Kakkad in the newspaper advertisement and the dead body photo on WhatsApp, he alerted us," victim's son Umesh Kakkad said. The body was found in Matheran ghats, which falls under Neral police station jurisdiction in Raigad district. "The body was found on Monday evening. We circulated the body's photo to various police departments so that it can be identified. The family approached us yesterday and the body was handed over to them. You are logged in via SSO accountInvite your friends via Facebookआपके मित्र क्या पढ़ रहे हैं? About Us |  Advertise with Us| Terms of Use and Grievance Redressal Policy |  Privacy Policy |  Feedback |  SitemapCopyright ©  2015  Bennett Coleman & Co. 2015-02-24dna impact: Kindness and the Mumbai - Daily News &
dna impact: Kindness and the Mumbai Wednesday, 25 February 2015 - 5:05am IST | Agency: dna | From the print edition Santosh Andhale 2Shares Facebook Twitter Google+ Reddit Comments Holes in three babies' hearts finally filled in through surgery on Monday, ending a dna campaign dna reported about the four babies on February 12 About two weeks ago, dna wrote about four helpless city couples who were unable to afford the cost of open-heart surgeries for their children, aged 19 days to 15 months. On Monday, three of the couples gave a massive sigh of relief as their children got operated upon at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH), Andheri. There's more good news: after surgery, the babies will be able to lead normal lives. Responding to the dna report of February 12, KDAH did the surgeries for free. The cost of each surgery would have ranged between Rs. 1.5 to 3 lakh. According to the KDAH doctors, the babies are responding well to the treatment. Said Dr Snehal Kulkarni, cardiologist from KDAH, We will keep them under observation for couple of days and will discharge them in a week's time." She added, "After the corrective surgery, the children will lead a normal life." Dr Kulkarni said, "Last week three out of four babies got admitted in KDAH. Before the surgery, we stabilised the babies and addressed the infections they already had. Once they were stabilised, we decided to go ahead with the surgery. One of the youngest babies is 29 days old, and we will operate upon her two months later, because currently she is not fit for surgery." Of the four babies, four-month-old Rahul Gupta and four-month-old Vidhi Pawar are in the intensive care unit (ICU) while 15-month old Sejal Jagtap has been transferred from the ICU to the general ward. The parents are overjoyed at the thought of their children leading a healthy life. "I never thought that my child will get operated upon in such a huge hospital. We couldn't have afforded the cost of treatment," said Vivek Jagtap, father of Sejal, who works as a barber in Ulhasnagar. Jagtap said that he is now waiting for the doctors to shift his daughter out from the ICU so that he can take her in his arms and play with her. "I am eagerly looking forward to the day when I will take my daughter home and see her grow up as a normal child," said Jagtap. Vinod Pawar, father of Vidhi, a Sandhurst road resident who works in a surgical shop, said, "We are really grateful for the fact that everything went smoothly." "We are speechless, we really don't have words to say thanks to god. This surgery has given my child a second life," said Rahul's father Dhanesh Gupta, who works as a daily wage labourer in Mumbra. 2Shares Facebook Twitter Google+ Reddit Comments DNA impactIntensive Care Unit (ICU)Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH)

The whirring of typewriter keys and the ping of the bell signalling the end of a sentence may soon fall silent in the state. According to a new government order , no fresh applications for setting up typing and shorthand institutes will be considered after March 15, 2015. From November, the manual typing curriculum will be gradually stalled. Issued by the education department, this order makes it clear that the government is ready to bid adieu to manual typing. The order will affect around 3,500 typing and shorthand institutes across the state, with at least 7,000 owners and trainers making a living by training lakhs of students, who appear for the examination conducted twice ayear. But the order has left a trail of questions in its wake. "The order itself is dubious. If the government wants to stall the curriculum for manual typing, why is it even accepting proposals for new institutes till March 15? Starting an institute requires an investment of at least Rs 1.50 lakh. If you are not in favour of continuing it, why force someone to make a useless investment?" demanded Prakash Karale, president of Maharashtra Rajya Tanklekhan Laghulekhan Shasanmanya Sansthanchi Sanghatana (the state association of shorthand and typewriting institutes). Karale claimed that the government had earlier made its intentions clear in a GR published on October 31, 2013, which stated that the curriculum for computerised typing would soon be introduced. "What I don't understand is why the Maharashtra State Council of Examinations was sitting on it all this time," he said. Association members had gathered in Khopoli in January 2015 to discuss this. Computerised typing seems rather ambitious for the state to implement, pointed out Pramod Hardikar, proprietor of Hardikar's Typing and Computer Institute, one of the oldest in the city, located on Karve Road. "They accept online forms for typing examinations, but if the server is down, we need to wait for hours to get the registration done. The results of examinations conducted in November are yet to be declared. This shows that the examination council does not have adequate manpower and expertise," Hardikar said. Most of all, the question and cost of adapting to newer technology has left institute owners in doubt. "It is difficult to shift to computerised typing, the sudden shift will require major investment. Our institute is 75 years old — it is not easy for us to adapt. I think the government would do well to continue with the manual typing curriculum for another four or to five years," said 64-yearold Mohan Kanade of Poona Shorthand and Typewriting Institute at Budhwar Peth. Kanade, however, admitted that finding spare parts for typewriters is getting more difficult by the day. "Major companies such as Remington, Hilda, and Godrej were shut down, so now institutes have to depend on makeshift arrangements. Sometimes, we have to rely on duplicate parts available at Ulhasnagar market," he added. For Pramod Mondhe, proprietor of Proficient Shorthand and Typing Institute near Shaniwarwada for the past 60 years, no matter how advanced technology is, basic typing skills need to begin from the typewriter. "Even if computerised typing is introduced, we will recommend that the government continue with the manual typing examination," he said. Vasant Paymal, commissioner of the examination council, admitted that the government wants to phase out manual typing as it is outdated. "However, considering that thousands of people depend on this business, it will be done gradually," he added. ►► Our institute is 75 years old — it is not easy for us to adapt. I think the govt would do well to continue with the manual typing curriculum for another four or five years - MOHAN KANADE, PROPRIETOR, POONA SHORTHAND AND TYPEWRITING INSTITUTE

People protest against Govind Pansare killing with morning walks; use #ShootMeIfYouCan Saturday, 21 February 2015 - 6:08pm IST Updated: Saturday, 21 February 2015 - 6:15pm IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: dna webdesk Pranav Joshi 13Shares Facebook Twitter Google+ Reddit Comments The murder of activist Govind Pansare has not gone unheeded in a state once known for its progressiveness. Even as political parties offer obituaries, condemnation and explanations, some people have decided to actively protest against such incidents. The murder of activist Govind Pansare has not gone unheeded in a state once known for its progressiveness. Even as political parties offer obituaries, condemnation and explanations, some people have decided to actively protest against such incidents. People from Ulhasnagar near Mumbai undertook morning strolls to protest against the recent killings of activists in Maharashtra. Before Pansare, anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar had been gunned down in Pune last year. Using the hash tag #ShootMeIfYouCan and #morningwalk, the protestors under the umbrella of 'Nav Vichar Andolan' sought to create awareness against increasing incidents of violence against activists. The rationale behind the morning protest and the #morningwalk was that both Pansare and Dabholkar were killed in the morning. The protesters also called upon people from other places to join in the morning stroll. Messages calling upon people to join in a morning stroll on Saturday were sent out at large to the public. The messages read: 'Do not fear those who threaten you with death. They were unable to overcome Mahatma Gandhi, Narendra Dabholkar or Govind Pansare. Let's go for a morning walk. As you walk, upload your photos on social media. Use twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp and even change your profile pictures. Get #shootmeifyoucan and #morningwalk to trend on Twitter so people wonder what is going on and are awakened to the cause.' Calling the protest the 'dawn of change', the protestors called upon people to write and discuss about the murders of Pansare and Dabholkar. 'We will answer bullets with words' said the volunteers. The protestors even dedicated a poem to those who had been killed, to inspire people to protest: They came for Gandhi, and shot him dead But I stayed silent Because I was not a Gandhian Then they came for Dr Datta Samant, and killed him too But I stayed silent Because I was not a mill worker Last year they came for Dr Narendra Dabholkar Yet I stayed silent Because I was not an anti-superstition activist either. Now they came for Comrade Pansare And killed him as well But I still stayed silent Because I was not a Communist Tomorrow they will come for me, and attack me But when I look around for help There will be no one left to save me. Dr Govind Pansare died in a Mumbai hospital on Saturday morning. In an uncanny resemblance with the attack on Dabholkar, Pansare, who was regarded as among the state's foremost public intellectuals, and wife Usha, who was also injured but is out of danger, were leaving for a morning walk when they were shot. After spending a few days in a hospital in Kolhapur, Pansare was shifted to Mumbai but died soon after. Minor Found Abused, Murdered on Lonavala Resort's TerraceOthers | mid-day.com | Updated: February 19, 2015 10:15 ISTRepresentational image. (Thinkstock) Kumar Resort in Lonavala became the centre of a horrific crime investigation after a seven-year-old girl was discovered dead on the terrace, after she had been brutally abused and murdered, two days after she went missing. The girl with partial vision impairment was attending her cousin's wedding there on Sunday night.   The girl's father blamed the police for slow action and alleged that he found no cooperation from the resort, which is owned by a former MLA from Mumbai. The deceased victim and her father had travelled to Lonavala from Indapur in Raigad to attend a wedding.   The father said he had originally intended to attend the wedding alone, because her vision was blurry in both short and long range. But the girl was excited about her cousin's wedding, and so he decided to take her along. "We reached Lonavala on Sunday morning around 11 am.   I dressed my daughter and she said she was looking like Kareena Kapoor. I did not know that was the last day I would see her," the girl's father recalled. The wedding ceremony began around 5.30 pm at Kumar Resort, and he recalled that his daughter was with him the whole time. Later, she went to get him soup but did not return.   For some time her father thought she was playing with her cousins. He only realised that she was missing around 9 pm, when it was time to go home. Family members looked for her and called out her name to no avail. Finally, around 11.30 pm, the victim's father lodged an FIR at the Lonavala City police station. The cops searched for the girl through Monday, but could find no sign of her.   Around 1 pm on Tuesday afternoon, two days after she first went missing, a resort employee went up to the terrace to clean the solar water heater and he found a rolled carpet behind one of the panels. He found the seven-year-old wrapped inside the carpet; her clothes were tattered, her throat had been slit and her jewellery was missing.   Doctors at Sassoon General hospital conducted the post mortem and revealed that while the cause of death was the slit throat, the victim had several injuries around her private parts that indicated sexual abuse, which led cops to add sexual assault and murder to the initial charge of abduction in the FIR. The doctors also suspected that she had been murdered before Tuesday, as her body was already decomposing.  'Negligent'   The girl's father claims that she could have been saved if the resort management and police had put in more effort. He said that although he had asked to see the resort's CCTV footage, his request was denied with different excuses.   "We approached the manager and pleaded for access to the CCTV footage but they claimed that they did not have the password to view it. They also said they did not have the footage saved and tried to hush up the case.   Later, the management claimed that the cameras were not in a working condition," he said. It should be noted that the police were given access to the footage on Monday. He voiced doubts about the cops' effectiveness as well.   "The police claimed that they had searched the entire resort on Monday. If that is true, how come my daughter's body was found on the next afternoon by the resort staff?"  Copspeak   Inspector IS Patil, who is in charge of the Lonavala City police, which comes under Pune Rural Police, said, "From the CCTV footage, we know that the girl was last seen around 10 pm on Sunday, when she was sitting on the ground floor with a female caterer.   The marriage was held on the ground floor but her body was found on the terrace, four floors above. There are no CCTVs on the upper floors, so we are looking for other clues. At present 40 staffers are being interrogated."   Pune Rural Police Superintendent Manoj Kumar Lohiya said, "We have formed four teams for the investigation and I am personally probing the case. There has been no negligence. If the parent has a complaint, they can approach me, but the priority is to investigate the case and zero down on the culprit."  Resort speak   To protest against the incident, local politicians and residents allegedly vandalised the resort premises during an agitation yesterday. Shops were closed and the police were forced to employ mild lathicharge to bring the mob under control.   Responding to the violence, former Ulhasnagar MLA, Kumar Ailani, who owns Kumar Resort, said, "We are co-operating with police and have sympathy towards the parent. The family had appointed private caterers and management for the wedding.   The issue of CCTV raised by the family is not true; we have a technical team in Mumbai handling the cameras. I do not know what has prompted the family and the local residents to raise objections against me. I know this is a mischievous act by some local politician. They have destroyed my hotel and broken the glass there."RelatedUber Gets 7-Day Ultimatum from Delhi Government to Mend Licence Application3-Year-Old Cousins Allegedly Raped by Neighbour in Uttar Pradesh5-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Raped by Minor Inside BJP's Branch Office in KolkataStory First Published: February 19, 2015 09:56 IST 4 Killed, 5 Injured in Car-Truck Collision in HathrasALSO READUber Gets 7-Day Ultimatum from Delhi Government to Mend Licence ApplicationKumar ResortLonavalaRapeSexual AssaultCrime against children................................ Surprised? Pharmacists and doctors say most of us are not well versed with how medicines should be consumed in order to benefit from them. Patients are not always at fault. "There is no one to tell them about common mistakes," says Manjiri Gharat, vice-president of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association, a body of over 10,000 pharmacists that's organising exhibitions across the city along with pharmacy students from K M Kundnani Pharmacy Polytechnic, Ulhasnagar, to raise awareness about the right techniques to consume medicines. "Ideally, a doctor should explain the dos and don'ts, and the pharmacist should be able to clarify if a person has further doubts," adds Gharat, listing common pill-popping mistakes and how they can be rectified. DON'T BREAK IT DOWN According to Gharat, some tablets have a polymer coating for sustained release (SR) or controlled release (CR) of the drug, once consumed. The 'SR' or 'CR' in fine print, refers to the proportion of medicine meant to be released in the blood, in small and large instalments respectively. Breaking such a tablet into two or three parts hampers the efficacy of coated drugs, releasing them into the bloodstream immediately. "This may cause a sudden effect on a patient or trigger a reaction in some cases," she says. Certain medicines are enteric coated (a barrier that protects the drug from the stomach acids) . These are meant to bypass the stomach and reach the intestine directly. "When a patient breaks this tablet into two, the drug gets mixed with the acids in the stomach. The effect of the medicine will be nil," Gharat explains. For example, commonly used antibiotic, Azithromycin has an enteric coating. DON'T GULP, CHEW Medicines that are meant to be chewed or dissolved in water should not be gulped down. Chewable tablets are meant to neutralise the acids in the stomach and they do it best when they are disintegrated properly by chewing. Gulping the tablet would mean more time for relief. Tablets meant to be dissolved in water also take longer to give relief if consumed whole. The packaging mentions if a tablet is chewable or dissolvable. USE MEASURING CUPS When a doctor prescribes one tablespoon of syrup, s/he means 5 ml. However, some tablespoons are larger while some are too small, due to which a patient almost always consumes the wrong quantity. Some even have the habit of directly sipping from the bottle. A measuring cap is the right way to go. AFTER MEAL OR BEFORE MEAL "The basic job of a drug is to cross all barriers and get into the blood. Certain drugs may irritate the lining of the stomach and cause gastrointestinal irritation if had on an empty stomach, while others may not require any hindrance of food for fast absorption," says Gharat, adding that some anti-fungal drugs work better when mixed with food inside the stomach. "This varies with each drug, and following rules is essential." When asked to take a pill after meals, you should ideally take it 15-20 minutes after the last bite. SAY NO TO COFFEE, TEA, COKE Drugs can react to several food items and, thus, pharmacists and doctors say a glass of water is the best thing to take drugs with. The calcium in milk can bind with the drug and form a complex substance that could lead, either to an adverse reaction or, mar the efficacy of the pill. Why are Mumbai Police protecting a bookie, Mr Rakesh Maria? Tuesday, 17 February 2015 - 5:00am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: dna | From the print edition Yogesh Pawar 13Shares Facebook Twitter Google+ Reddit Comments Mumbai police, which claim to have heightened surveillance of bookies during the ICC World Cup on orders from its chief Rakesh Maria, have also provided known international cricket bookie Anil Jaisinghani with armed policemen as protection just before the tournament began on Saturday. Mumbai police, which claim to have heightened surveillance of bookies during the ICC World Cup on orders from its chief Rakesh Maria, have also provided known international cricket bookie Anil Jaisinghani with armed policemen as protection just before the tournament began on Saturday. The duality of approach becomes starker when you consider that Jaisinghani is a suspect under ICC's Anti Corruption and Security Unit's scanner. Who is Jaisinghani? He has been arrested for betting multiple times -- in 2002 in Ulhasnagar, in 2005 in Raipur and in 2009 in Mumbai -- under the Gambling and Telegraph Act. His name also shows up as a 'history-sheeter' on the Thane police website. In 2010, then home minister RR Patil withdrew protection following a question in the assembly by BJP's Devendra Fadnavis and in the legislative council by the party's Ranjit Patil on why Jaisinghani was being given the privilege. But Fadnavis is the CM now... Yes, and Ranjit Patil is minister of state for home. Many, like the party's own legislator Narendra Pawar, are raising eyebrows as to why protection to the kingpin in the 'Rs 1,200 crore World Cup betting scene' has been reinstated. "How can a man with such an 'impressive' criminal track record of half-murder, extortion, intimidation and fraud be given police protection by this government when it was withdrawn at your behest earlier?" Pawar had said in a letter to Fadnavis and Patil. dna called Patil for a reaction and even messaged him twice but he didn't reply. What's the police commissioner saying? The letter, copied to Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria and his Thane counterpart Vijay Kamble, says: "Jaisinghani, who cumulatively enjoyed police protection under the earlier regime for 11 years, owes the home department over Rs 38 lakh in fees. How can he get protection again when he hasn't paid up for before?" Is the bookie's son also being protected? Jaisinghani's protective police posse, which accompanies his 12-year-old son Akshaan, has led to awe and fear in Ulhasnagar. "This demonstrates how blatantly a man with a known criminal track record can show that the police is in his pocket," said a police officer on condition of anonymity. Has he got a mole in the police? One police official told dna on condition of anonymity, "Jaisinghani's mole in the police is one PSI who had been demoted and sent on punishment transfer to Gadchiroli, following an extortion case. Reposted to Ulhasnagar, this PSI who uses Jaisinghani's Gold Maidan residence as his de facto office, is the one who pushed for the latest police protection." What's Thane police saying? Thane CP Vijay Kamble, who is on the verge of retirement, said: "Keep me out of this. The Mumbai police have done this without keeping us in the loop. Why don't you ask them?" Calls to Rakesh Maria and a detailed text to him also drew a blank. What have Ulhasnagar residents got to say? Ulhasnagar resident Ajit Singh Labana spoke of how police protection underlined why the entire area was scared of Jaisinghani. He should know. After his wife Meena Kaur trounced Jaisinghani in the local civic polls in February 2012, Labana found himself charged with a false case of attempted murder. "I was alleged to have shot at one Abdul Gafoor from Bharatpur in Rajasthan. Forget Bharatpur where the alleged attack happened, I'd never even set foot on the state ever," he said, recalling the harrowing three months of legal and bureaucratic processes before he could clear his name. What is Jaisinghani saying? He told dna that there was nothing wrong in him getting protection. "How could I get protection if the police aren't convinced? They feel my family and me are in danger due to vigilantism, which led to several dance bar owners and bookies being trapped in raids," he said, refusing to spell out which ones. "The protection is for that. All other stories about my involvement are lies spread by enemies." How did he get arms licences then? Jaisinghani has two arms licences – one in his father Bhagwandas' name and the other in wife Karishma's name. "The latter was issued by then Thane CP SPS Yadav on the last day before his retirement," a police source said. "This shows his clout," he said. 13Shares Facebook Twitter Google+ Reddit Comments Ajit SinghbettingbookiesCommissioner of PoliceCricketDevendra Fadnavisextortion caseGovernmentGamblingInternational cricketMumbai PoliceRakesh MariaWorld Cup 2015

He had been underground since 2007. Goa Police on Saturday arrested Shyam Kishor Garikapatti, a Dawood Ibrahim gang-member convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case and involved in 18 other major crimes, including the JJ Hospital shootout, from Saligao village near Panaji. Garikapatti, who had assumed the name Govind Rao, had remained hidden in Goa since 2007. Police sources said he left the country frequently, travelling to Russia and Dubai using a fake passport. He had invented two identities, with which he cloaked himself while conducting his affairs. Garikapatti jumped parole in 2003. While in Goa, he was employed with a construction company, which police say could have been used as a front to shield his true identity. Kishore had worked around the mandatory tenant verification procedure by occupying a house in Saligao that belonged to the company that employed him. "He is originally from Pune and was associated with the D-gang for the last two decades," superintendent of police North Goa, Karthik Kashyap, told Mirror. "He was also in frequent touch with D-gang leader Subhash Thakur during his stay in Goa." Thakur and Garikapatti were involved in the shootout at the JJ hospital. Earlier, they worked for Dawood but parted ways later and joined Ali Budesh. Termed as an expert planner, he along with Thakur worked for Ulhasnagar politician and gangster Pappu Kalani and was involved in almost all the executions that Kalani had ordered. Son of a former secretary-level officer with central government, Garikapatti is post-graduate and speaks many languages. "Garikapatti is an expert in planning and almost all the hits ordered by Kalani and Thakur were planned by him. He had a major role in planning the JJ shoot out and murder of Mumbai builder Natwarlal Desai. He can read a 500-page book in just three hours and is the mastermind behind operations of Thakur and Budesh gangs," said a senior police officer, who was with the Mumbai Crime Branch. Meanwhile, Kashyap added, "We were aware for a few weeks that he was using an adopted identity. In fact, he would have been arrested when he made a trip to Hyderabad recently was it not for a few details that needed clarifying." On Saturday, a raiding party locked down the Saligao neighbourhood in which he lived. A team then entered his house posing as locals. Garikapatti introduced himself as Govind Rao and kept at the ruse till the police team unearthed sufficient evidence - including 3 sets of identification documents - that gave him away. A country-made 9 mm pistol was discovered at the house, and Garikapatti will be charged with possessing it. The gangster was recognised in Mumbai by his street name "Black Scorpion," and played a critical role in the JJ Hospital shootout of the early 90s, involving the gangs of Dawood Ibrahim and Arun Gawli. He also allegedly participated in the attack on residents of the coastal village, Vadrai on April 30, 1991. He is accused of complicity in several murder cases. Garikapatti was earlier imprisoned under the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) in the murder of Maruti Jadhav, an associate of former Dawood Ibrahim cohort and one-time Shiv Sena politician Gopal Rajwani. He is also wanted in connection with a murder in the precincts of Maharashtra's Vithalwadi police station.

According to an investigating officer, two cars matching the description of the vehicle, a white Maruti Dzire, filmed by CCTV cameras, have been inspected and cleared of having caused the accident. A third, registered to a man in Ambernath, is yet to be examined. The hit-and-run, which occurred at 5pm on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, off Deolvadi village, caused the victim, Gauri Devghare, who was returning home from school, severe brain trauma. Sudhir Badekar, a resident of the neighbouring village, took Gauri to the government hospital in Karjat but as her condition was critical, she was then referred to MGM hospital in Kalamboli. The police examined CCTV footage and narrowed down the possible registration number combinations to three. The first number that the cops tried looking for was MH05 BL 3335, which was linked to a car registered by a Dombivali family. The police determined that although the family sought the number, it wasn't allotted to them. The second registration number belonged to an Ulhasnagar based businessman - investigators cleared him of any links to the accident. The third was traced to a man in Ambernath. "Our team reached the person's residence but he and his family members were not at home," said senior police inspector R R Patil from Karjat police station. "When we checked with neighbours they identified the car as the same that the family has. We are very close to cracking the case and the accused will be nabbed soon." Meanwhile Devghare continues to receive treatment in MGM Hospital, with doctors reporting no improvement in his condition. A senior executive from a leading bank has offered to cover her medical expenses.

While the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has been ordered to initiate a special drive against 66,000 illegal structures as per the Bombay High Court order issued on Friday, they seem to have missed a different battle, right under their noses. Around 3,400 additional illegal structures were erected after 2012, when the HC had ordered the first demolition drive. Now, officials of the anti-encroachment and building permission department have to raze these additional structures with less manpower and low morale due to assurances issued by political parties about regularisation of these illegal structures. The HC bench, on Friday, expressed dissatisfaction over a slowed-down demolition drive of illegal structures since a year. The bench observed that the civic body and the anti-encroachment squad have somehow managed to raze only 825 illegal structures. The court further observed that the action is slow and only 66 structures have been pulled down in the past two months. According to sources, some officials are reluctant following the transfer of Dr Shrikar Pardeshi, the newly appointed civic chief, Rajeev Jadhav, is dealing with the issue but is not getting much support. Many officials are trying to kill time under the impression that the BJP-led government would regularise the constructions like in Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation and Gujarat. The recruitment drive for the demolition squad is also stuck in formalities due to reservation and monetiary provisions. According to the information with the building department, the city has 66,324 illegal constructions erected before 2012. However, now, the number has increased by 3,471 constructions till date. The civic body has issued demolition notices to around 12,000 constructions only. Taking a strong stand against illegal structures, Jadhav said, "The officers at zonelevel will be held responsible if any new structure is erected without permission. If it is found that they are reluctant to act, they will be punished per law." "There is no pressure about regularisations of structures, the high court is above all and it is mandatory to follow the orders," he added. When asked about his action plan, he said, "First, they will target the constructions erected on reserved land and those obstructing the roads. We are studying the HC order and will initiate action soon." NO FEAR An officer attached to the building construction department said the number of new illegal structures is more than those demolished in the past two years. This trend indicates that there is no more fear in the minds of offenders after the transfer of Dr Pardeshi. The officers are also not very keen to continue the drive due to political pressure. The BJP-led government is also in support of regularising such structures.

RTE: Admission schedule for 25% quota announced 0 Comments Email Print From this year, the online procedure of admissions will be implemented across many more corporations in the state. By: Express News Service | Pune | Posted: February 8, 2015 11:46 am | Updated: February 8, 2015 11:48 am The state education department has finally come out with the schedule of admission for the 25 per cent quota reserved for students belonging to the economically weaker sections of the society under Right to Education Act, 2009. Last year the online system for admission was introduced in the cities of Pune, Mumbai and Panvel. From this year, the online procedure will be implemented across many more corporations in the state. There will be a first round for school registration and the next will be for form filling after which the dates of lottery will be announced. The education department made clear that there would be no extension given to schools or parents in dates as the dates were being declared well in advance. The school registrations will start first on a pilot basis in Nashik. “We were facing an issue of different age groups. Uniform age across boards will be applicable from next year. This year, we have asked all schools to specify age limit while they register names of students in the software. This will help the parents as whenever they enter the details of their ward while filling forms, the child will be assigned to the schools nearest to their houses as per their age,” said Mahavir Mane, director, primary education. In Nashik, the school registration will be conducted from February 9 to14 and online form filling will be from February 16 to 28. In Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Ulhasnagar, Mira-Bhaynder, Navi Mumbai, Nagpur, Amravati, Latur, Aurangabad and Kolhapur, the school registration process will begin on February 16 and continue till February 21. Online form filling will be conducted from February 23 to March 7 in these cities. Moreover, this year, help-centres will be kept open even during weekends so that parents belonging to economically weaker sections, who cannot leave even a day’s work, can avail the facility on holidays. “List of help-centres and verification centres along with list of required documents will be given on the website rte25admission.maharashtra.gov.in which will be soon operational. While the parents can apply online, they will have to visit the help centres, once, so that all documents are verified and there are no problems further,” said Dinkar Temkar who is deputy director of primary education, Maharashtra. Talking about the reimbursement that is yet to be received by private schools under RTE, Mane said that a proposal of Rs 26 crore had been sent to the state government. The government has also asked the Centre to give its 65 percent share in the RTE reimbursement. So, from next academic year (2015-16), the fee-reimbursement amount of 65% would be given by central government and the remaining would be given by state government, said Mane. 0 Comments

Road mishap: Father booked for daughter's death Wednesday, 4 February 2015 - 6:30am IST | Agency: dna | From the print edition Arvind Walmiki 0Shares Facebook Twitter Google+ Reddit Comments In a strange turn of events, two months after a father-daughter duo met with a road accident that led to the death of the daughter, her father has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.  In a strange turn of events, two months after a father-daughter duo met with a road accident that led to the death of the daughter, her father has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.  Bharat Singh, 42, father of the deceased 24-year-old Bharti Singh, was charged under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code at Kolshewadi police station on February 2.  The other charges he is facing are included under IPC sections 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 279 (rash driving), and Motor Vehicles Act 184. On December 7, Singh was dropping his daughter to Vitthalwadi railway station around 8 am on a two-wheeler, when a four-wheeler raced past them at close quarters. To avoid a collision, Singh veered way from the car but ended up hitting a boulder and falling over. Bharti received deep injuries to her chest as she hit the divider, and both her legs were broken. It was a while before some passing autorickshaws stopped and took them to Shivneri Hospital. While Singh was discharged, it was decided to shift Bharti to KEM or Sion hospital. But she succumbed to her injuries on December 9 and the Kolshewadi police was informed. On December 27, an accidental death report (ADR) was lodged after which investigations started. On February 2, the Kolshewadi cops lodges a complaint against Singh as he was the one riding the bike. Singh told dna, “I have given all necessary documents to the police station. If they take any step against me, it will be disturbing to my family. Already, we are very tensed." About the incident, he said, "Normally, my son used to drop my daughter, a fashion designer, in the morning and i would ick her up from Vithalwadi station in the evening, but that day, I went to drop her and we met with an accident. It was not my fault, but of the four-wheeler's. As we fell, I also got hurt and was unable to take down the vehicle's number. It was morning hours and no none was around to help me take it down either." "We were going to arrange her marriage this year," Singh said.  A Vitthalwadi police official said, "The accused stays at Mahadev Nagar in Vitthalwadi, Ulhasnagar, but the accident occurred on a highway road called Punalink Road, Khadegolavli, Kalyan, which comes under Kolshewadi police's jurisdiction and so the case was lodged there." V K Hire, investigation officer, said, “We have registered an ADR and on the basis of investigations, we have lodged a case against the father as he was riding the two-wheeler.We have asked him to come to the police station for the statement and he said he would come by evening." He added, " The case got registered late perhaps because the papers from the hospital were delivered to the police station late, which caused a delay." 0Shares Facebook Twitter Google+ Reddit Comments accidental deathBharti SinghCulpable homicidedeathfashion designerMotor Vehicles Actroad accidentrash driving
