2018-12-28Ulhasnagar Sindhis drifting away from Hinduism - Afternoon Voice
Ulhasnagar Sindhis drifting away from Hinduism Convertion to Christianity has stormed in north-east Mumbai December 28, 2018 The Sindhi community in Ulhasnagar, north-east of Mumbai, is enduring a social turmoil, for the last few years, a sizable number in the township – primarily created for Sindhis who came in as refugees from Pakistan’s Sindh province after partition – have drifted away from Hinduism and embraced Christianity. In Ulhasnagar and other places surrounding Thane, many Hindu Sindhis have been lured into Christianity. Though, the estimated number of converted Sindhis varies according to different sources, one can safely assume that at least 20,000-30,000 Sindhis have been converted in past few years. Nikhil Namdeo Bhole a resident of Ulhasnagar told this paper, “The Christian missionaries are organising several gatherings and most of the participants are Hindu. No one knows how it started, but it has spread like wildfire.” Another resident and social worker for Kalyan, Mrs Manju said, “The missionaries are going door to door and convincing people for conversion to Christianity, which is very dangerous trend. They lure people exploiting their weaknesses.” It is reported that there are many mini-churches operational in and around Ulhasnagar area and they look similar to temples; and Jesus Christ is depicted as Bhagwan Isu/Yeshu, to bait the Hindus into thinking that it is quite similar to Hinduism. In fact, a sub-group has been created in a famous matrimonial website citing the title of “Sindhi Christian”. A Sindhi “Pastor” – Soni Basantani has effectively lured many Hindu Sindhis into Christianity in Ulhasnagar and nearby area. These Sindhis were either poor, or they were going through a rough patch in life and were offered a solution to their life “problems” through “Christ” by the said Pastor. Carols have been made in Sindhi for deeper penetration in the community and propagate the spread of Christianity among Sindhi language speakers.
2018-12-28How long would Hindus be compromised? - Afternoon Voice
How long would Hindus be compromised? December 28, 2018 It is very unfortunate to see Sindhis losing touch with their own religion. There is a famous proverb in Hindi “Akela bacha hamesha gidh ki nazar mein hota hai”, which means “A lonely child is always a soft prey for vulture”. This small community gives a huge competition to brands across the globe, like, you name the product, and they will have it ten times cheaper. A large number of Sindhis, fleeing from Pakistan during the Partition, arrived in Mumbai suburbs and got settled in Chembur, Thane (Kopri), as well as a large number of them moved to Ulhasnagar, on the banks of River Ulhas. As the area developed, Sindhis nurtured their culture, making Ulhasnagar synonymous with the Sindhi population. However, ironically, the human has become too cheap here. For a few benefits and financial assistance, entire Ulhasnagar is slowly adopting Christianity. These Christian missionaries are playing very smartly with the emotions of the people, which can reflect to Evangelist that is working furiously. One of my friend, who resides in Ulhasnagar, told me, these missionaries ask you to retain your Hindu name, build a church, looking like a temple, and have Jesus to pray as Yesu Sahasranama. As we see, they are the height of hypocrisy bundled with funds from the USA to convert Hindus into Christians. Apart from it, these days even the funds are grabbed from the pockets of the prosperous Hindus, who once got converted to Christianity. Those, who are getting converted, are materialistic fools, having been forgotten their Hindu forefathers, who would rise from death to harass the descendants for their negligence in worshipping the Hindu Gods. For the last five to six years, Ulhasnagar has been seeing a quiet spurt in the number of “prayer halls”, where a pastor chaperones a weekly congregation. There are now 50 to 70 such halls in Ulhasnagar, a hub of Sindhi traders and executives. These institutions are very smart to grab the money from the prosperous converted Sindhis to the name of donations, while giving the same money to the poor Sindhis if they get converted. We, the Hindus, are not only getting exploited through the pockets, but also our souls are leeched by these vultures to get converted. It is a high time when we need to stand by our people and say “ENOUGH” to such adaptations. Whether it is due to losses suffered in business or traditional family ties breaking down, several thousand Sindhis in Ulhasnagar have found themselves drawn to Christianity. Some of them belong to Hindu scheduled castes, and a large number are poor Sindhis. That growing number has now drawn a sharp divide in a town that was, until now, more identical than other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The word ‘secular’ was discussed, debated by the Constituent Assembly and it was decided not to include the word in the Constitution. In 1976, the Congress government had a huge majority and the then PM got it incorporated in the preamble of the Constitution. The intentions were debatable then and now. Many of the 42nd amendment insertions were gross violations of many cherished principles of democracy and were repealed by subsequent amendments. No other country has this word in their written constitution. Bangladesh had originally incorporated this word in their constitution but later withdrew the same. In our Constitution, either it should be properly defined or it should be removed. It is the most misused and misinterpreted word by our politicians and some vested communities and is used for convenience. The irony is that, a particular community which can never be secular because of its proselytising religion uses for themselves as “secular votes”. India is neither Socialist nor Secular. From 2004-2014 UPA was in power and it was a socialist-leaning government. Now NDA is in power which is capitalist-leaning; so how we are socialist? India is not secular either. Secularism means “absence of religiousness”; while India is one of the most religious nations in the world. Only countries like North Korea and China can be called secular. The Indian version of Secularism is very different from the secularism practised in several other democratic countries. India has reduced the secularism to mean being pro-Muslims and nothing else. In this sense it’s a communal term and should be removed from India’s Constitution. Instead, India’s Constitution should be changed to add the description of the sense of the secular word. The way things stand, members of Hindu religious groups employ the term contemptuously, usually twisting it to “pseudo-secular”; politicians from non-religious parties pay lip service to it without much conviction; and leaders of Muslim outfits uphold it to protect various unjust religious practices, but abandon it when it threatens such practices, as when a secular civil code is mentioned.
2018-12-27PM Narendra Modi Congratulates Himachal Pradesh CM Jai Ram Thakur For Completing One Year in Office; Attacks - India.com News
BJP Govt Completes One Year in Office in HP: PM Congratulates CM, Attacks Congress Over OROP Updated: December 27, 2018 2:43 PM IST Shimla: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed ‘Jan Abhar Rally’ in Dharamshala on Thursday and congratulated the Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Himachal Pradesh for completing one year in office. Addressing the gathering, he said the state was like his home. Adding further, he described Himachal Pradesh as the land of brave soldiers who were ever ready to make supreme sacrifices at the border. Congratulating Thakur on completing one year as chief minister, Modi said, “Himachal Pradesh is like my home. I worked here for several years for the party’s organisational work.” The Prime Minister also attacked the Congress. He said, “For forty years, our ex-servicemen asked for ‘One Rank, One Pension’. The previous government allocated just Rs 500 crore for it. But when we came to power, we implemented OROP and ensured welfare of our ex-servicemen.” Earlier in the day, at least 35 students of a computer training centre, on their way to Police Grounds to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Dharamshala, were injured as the bus in which they were travelling in overturned. Among the injured, the condition of five is stated to be critical and they have been admitted to hospital. The incident happened in Jawali sub-division of Kangra district when the driver of a private school bus, carrying the students, lost control over the vehicle, as a result of which it overturned.
2018-12-27Amazon And Flipkart's Flash Sales & Heavy Discounts May End, As Govt Restricts E-Commerce Party - India Times
Amazon And Flipkart's Flash Sales & Heavy Discounts May End, As Govt Restricts E-Commerce Party Updated: Dec 27, 2018, 12:47 PM IST For those of you that look forward to Diwali and New Year discounts online each year, you're about to have a rude awakening. According to new policy from the government, we might have seen the last of flash sales and deep discounts on sites like Flipkart and Amazon. The rules are part of new foreign direct investment (FDI) regulations put into place by the Indian government, that aim to stop major ecommerce companies like Amazon and Flipkart from pricing local traders out of the market. The new rules ban ecommerce sites from selling products from companies they have an equity interest in. In addition, they're now forbidden to enter into exclusivity agreements with sellers, like how certain smartphones are only sold on one platform or the other. The new rules will be come into effect from February 1. "An entity having equity participation by e-commerce marketplace entity or its group companies, or having control on its inventory by e-commerce marketplace entity or its group companies, will not be permitted to sell its products on the platform run by such marketplace entity," the commerce ministry said in a statement. The new regulations follow close on the heels of complaints from Indian retailers, who accuse the ecommerce giants of using their control over inventory from their affiliates to create an unfair marketplace that allows them to sell some products at very low prices. The All India Online Vendors Association (AIOVA) had filed a petition in October with the anti-trust body Competition Commission of India (CCI) against Amazon. The same body had also filed another earlier this May against Flipkart. The rules don't specifically ban offers like cashbacks, discounts, or other. However, the government has indicated the process needs to be completely impartial in order to be allowed, and not dependent on whether the product is from the platform's affiliate. It's a discussion that's been going on for years, ever since digital marketplaces first gained a foothold in India, with local traders worried they would be simply pushed out by predatory pricing, where giants are capable of massively lowering their profit margins to gain smaller traders' consumers. So far, Flipkart has not yet commented on the issue, while Amazon has said it's still reviewing the new regulations.

2018-12-26Technology solution to problems of faith - Daily News & Analysis
Technology solution to problems of faith Updated: Dec 27, 2018, 05:20 AM IST Dear Readers,A week has passed since your paper stated the Gratitude Series. Every day now, we have thanked those who helped make this world a better place in 2018. Today, we bow to those who showed us that religion can be a personal and beautifulexperience, and that a silent prayer can say many a thing Mindful of the sound pollution caused by religious celebrations, some organizations decided that the path to divinity and revelry need not be noisy. Ulhasnagar's Amritvela trust initiated silent morning kirtans using bluetooth headphones led by the guru and kirtankaar (preacher) Gurpreet Singh Rinku. Amrit Vela is an auspicious prayer ritual in Sikhism held between 4 am to 6 am. The organisers were concerned this would inconvenience non-participants. "We have been organizing Amrit Vela prayers for six to seven years," says Gurmukh Singh, spokesperson of the trust. "However, a Supreme Court order prohibits use of loudspeakers between 10 pm to 6 am in public spaces. Some people in the neighborhood also filed cases against us. We wanted to honour our tradition as well respect the law, and hence had to find a middle path." Their techno savvy guru went to China and met factory owners who tailormade a tech solution for their problem of faith. The unique technology collects the master sound in one machine and relays it to thousands of bluetooth enabled headphones used by the devotees. No microphone is used and Amrit Vela proceeds unhindered. The trust is capable of running the technology for up to 35,000 devotees at one go. This year, during Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations, the trust set up LED screens in a maidan and on street corner so devotees could listen to bhajans even from the comfort of their cars. A commercial host in Malad also decided to hush their Navratri celebrations with a silent garba held at Rajmahal Banquets. "We saw the song from Ae Dil Hain Mushkil which is set in a silent disco," says Aboli Ambardekar, director of Rajmahal Banquets, "Garba gigs in Mumbai have to end at 10:30 pm as per court rules on noise pollution. So we decided to organize a silent garba." The patrons were given a choice of three audio channels playing various genres of music – film songs, traditional Gujarati garba and Electronic Dance Music (EDM) on their headphones. You choose one and break out a move. Soon, other banquets began emulating the concept and it suited Mumbai's night owls just fine. Silent garbas can go on till 4 am without the fear of police crackdown as they do not flout the 10:30 pm curfew imposed on loudspeakers.

More than five teams of the police were in search of the gang that operated in Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, and the 10 accused were arrested with the help of CCTV footage. The gang was given the name due to the use of chaddars (bed-sheets) in their modus operandi. A few of the gang members pretend to be beggars, sleep on the streets, and keep an eye on shops. 2018-12-21Maharashtra mulls for direct election of mayor - Lakeland Observer
Maharashtra mulls for direct election of mayor Tweet Share Share By Lakeland Staff Writer on December 21, 2018 span.p-content div[id^=div-gpt] { line-height: 0px; font-size: 0px;} The government is mulling to hold direct elections for the mayor's post in the corporations that fall under the C and D category, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said. The CM said recently, polls to gram panchayat and municipal council were made direct, while there has been a similar demand to hold the mayoral polls. "There is a demand for direct election (of mayors). We recently made the Gram panchayat and municipal council elections direct. The problem with municipal corporations is that, 90 per cent of elections are over and it will now be held only after five years," Fadnavis said. He was speaking after inaugurating a two-day All India Mayors' Council, organised by Aurangabad municipal corporation yesterday in Aurangabad. "We just have 2-4 municipal corporation polls pending," he said, adding, another constraint is that since cities are very big in the state, experimenting becomes difficult. "But, we will definitely think about holding direct mayoral elections for small cities, whose civic bodies fall in the C and D category," the CM said. Out of the 25 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, 21 fall under categories C and D. Mumbai municipal corporation falls under the 'A+' category, and municipal corporations come under 'A' category. The 'B' category comprises Thane and municipal corporations. Municipal corporations that fall under C and D categories are — Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivali, Vasai-Virar, Mira Bhayander, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Solapur, Kolhapur, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Amravati, Ahmednagar, Akola, Jalgaon, Nanded, Malegaon, Aurangabad, Latur, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Panvel. In May 2016, the BJP-led state government revived a system of direct election of municipal council presidents. Notably, it had reaped dividends in the municipal council polls held during the November-December-January period. The government, earlier this year approved a proposal for direct election of village sarpanch, by amending the Gram Panchayat Act of 1958. CCTV footage shows 'bedsheet gang' robbing mobile store in Mumbai, third time in a week Mirror Now Updated Dec 21, 2018 | 09:31 IST | Mirror Now Digital Mumbai police are chasing a gang of robbers being dubbed as the 'chaddar' (bedsheet) gang owing to their modus operandi of breaking into mobile shops. This gang has stolen goods worth Rs 50 lakh as of yet. Officials from different police station across Mumbai have formed teams to nab the gang (Representative Image)  |  Photo Credit: BCCL Mumbai: In the third such incident coming to light from the area, a gang of five men broke into a mobile shop in Mumbai's Kalyan and made away valuables worth lakhs. City police officials said that the modus operandi of the gang resembles the approach used in two other break-ins in the same area in the last one week. Local media have dubbed the miscreants as the 'chaddar' (bedsheet) gang owing to the nature of their crimes. Shedding light on the most recent break-in which took place in a mobile shop on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi Road on Tuesday, Mumbai police said that one of the gang members positioned himself in front of the shop with a bedsheet while others broke into the shop. Footage recovered from CCTV cameras installed in the area show a man holding a bedsheet, pretending to fold it while other members of his gang were busy breaking the locks of the mobile shop. Also Read: Pune: ‘Tracksuits, a bedsheet and a whole lot of energy’, all you need to rob a store of Rs 20 lakh A senior police official told The Indian Express that the latest break-in puts the total value of goods stolen from three mobile shops in Kalyan in the last week to Rs 50 lakh. He added that even after the incident was caught on CCTV camera, members of the gang have not been identified due to the grainy footage. The officer also said that teams from the Ulhasnagar police station and nearby areas are working with the Kalyan police to identify and arrest members of the gang. A similar modus operandi was reported from Pune earlier this year where a gang of tracksuit-clad men broke into shops in the early hours of morning towards the end of October and fled with loot valued at Rs 19.55 lakh. At the time, police had told media personnel that while two gang members held a bedsheet in front of the shop's shutter, their accomplices cut the locks of the shop and robbed it. 2018-12-20Ulhasnagar hospital to be demolished - The Hindu
Ulhasnagar hospital to be demolished UPDATED: DECEMBER 20, 2018 22:54 IST With a structural audit of the Ulhasnagar ESIC hospital in May declaring it to be unfit, the three-storey medical facility will soon be demolished to make way for a modern, fireproof building. The hospital, located in Camp Number 3 of Ulhasnagar, was partly renovated after it was established in 1976. While the ground floor appears well kept, the first and second floors are not in a good condition. A visit to the hospital revealed that fire extinguishers were kept in a closed ward on the second floor for the past few years. The third floor is not in use due to severe damage to ceiling plaster. The hospital does not have an Intensive Care Unit and in case of emergencies, patients are shifted to other hospitals.
2018-12-20Mumbai: Hiding behind a bedsheet, gang of five burgles three mobile stores - The Indian Express
Mumbai: Hiding behind a bedsheet, gang of five burgles three mobile stores “We caught this on CCTV cameras, but they are of a poor quality and we are unable to see their faces clearly,” said a senior police officer, adding that the gang had stolen mobile phones worth Rs 50 lakh. Published: December 21, 2018 2:33:27 A GANG of five men have found a unique way to break into shops. So far, they have allegedly burgled three mobile stores in different areas of Kalyan in the last one week. Police said the gang, dubbed the ‘chaddar’ gang, had used a bedsheet for each break-in. Advertising They added that CCTV footage showed that one gang member stood outside the shop with a bedsheet as if he was folding it. The others hid behind the bedsheet and broke into shops. “We caught this on CCTV cameras, but they are of a poor quality and we are unable to see their faces clearly,” said a senior police officer, adding that the gang had stolen mobile phones worth Rs 50 lakh. The latest break-in happened on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi Road on Tuesday. “There was a break-in at a mobile shop. The CCTV footage from a camera nearby showed that the modus operandi was the same as the last two break-ins, one on Sunday and another last week,” said an officer who is investigating the matter. “Despite stringent surveillance across the city due to the Prime Minister’s visit, the thieves have managed to break in. This shows how weak the police system has become. We are all worried about our shops being broken into next,” said Vishwas Anghare, a businessman who owns a shop on the same road. “The burglars only took phones. We are tracing the men and have started an investigation. Police teams from Ulhasnagar and other regions nearby are already working with us,” said a senior officer.
2018-12-19Hamid Nihal Ansari — A story from fake to facts - Afternoon Voice
Hamid Nihal Ansari — A story from fake to facts December 19, 2018 amid Nihal Ansari, then 27, left home on November 5, 2012, claiming he was headed to Afghanistan in search of a job. But his family later came to know from the officials and the associates that he was in love with a woman from the Kohat region of western Pakistan and had decided to cross over to prevent her marriage with another man. Ansari was convinced by friends and contacts in Pakistan that he could enter the country easily from Afghanistan. He created many Facebook accounts and multiple email addresses; he was a social media bug and had many female crushes. But one stuck to his choice was this Pakistani girl. They were chatting with each other for a long time; sharing photos and phone numbers established a close bond between them. One day, the lady love told Ansari that her parents had got to know about the relationship and were getting her married to someone. Then, she disappeared. Ansari had gone to Kabul to cross the border illegally into Pakistan so that he could rescue her from the forced marriage. In her last phone call to him, she was crying and said that her sister had told the parents about their relationship. Her Facebook was likely deleted. Ansari had countless Facebook chats with a few Pakistanis to discuss his dilemma. Transcripts of those, shared by his parents, helped to piece together what had happened. Three online Pakistani friends not only encouraged Ansari to cross the border illegally from Kabul to Kohat but also gave him detailed instructions. One of them even instigated him to not waste time and get there to save his lover. These friends were Atta-ur Rehman Awan, a graphic designer with Dastak, an Urdu magazine in Kohat; one Shazia Khan who claimed to be a medical doctor in Islamabad and the mysterious Saba Khan. This is the story that disturbed Hamid Nihal Ansari and he headed towards Pakistan making fake Pakistani I-Card. He lived virtually with many fake identities and living fake was a part of his lifestyle. A hysterical Ansari did all he could do to find out about his love. He even found another Kohat woman on Facebook and requested her to find out. She couldn’t. He decided to try and get a Visa to Kohat, making several calls to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi. As a Rotarian, he managed to get an official invitation from the Peshawar Chapter of the Rotary club to visit Peshawar and Kohat to interact with the local youth. The Pakistani government wasn’t taken in by the idea. He met Mumbai-based activist Jatin Desai of the Pakistan-India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy. Perhaps, Desai could help him get a Visa. Kohat is in the heart of a conflict zone so Desai advised him to forget the girl. Ansari’s madness for that girl was visible to many of his close associates; he went from Mumbai to Kabul and illegally crossed over into Pakistan to look for a Pashtun woman he had fallen in love with through the internet. The Peshawar High Court had asked the government to find out where Hamid Ansari is, and also asked an Islamabad-based commission to investigate. Those days, Hamid was working as a management teacher in Mumbai, told his parents that he had an offer for a job at the Kabul Airport. His parents were against the idea, fearing for his safety. But he insisted that it would be good for his CV. As he faked everywhere, he lied to his parent’s too. His parents last spoke to him on November 10, 2012, when he told them that he would be returning soon as the visit to Afghanistan was not fruitful. However, after November 15, when his phone was not reachable, his parents lodged a complaint at the Versova police station. Hamid Ansari’s mother is a college lecturer in Mumbai. His father is a banker. They emailed all three people and got no replies. Most phone numbers in the chats have stopped taking calls from the Indian numbers. Fauzia Ansari had a relative in Dubai, who said that he had found a dhaba in Kohat for Hamid to stay. He was there for about two days, after which the “agencies” took him away. They started probing his emails and Facebook pages for a clue. The last email was sent to a girl identified as ‘Saba’, stating that he was with Attubhai. He had been in love with a woman in Pakistan over the internet for two years. She lives in a place where honour killing is not uncommon. When his parents went through his Facebook pages they learnt about his friendship with a few Pakistani nationals. The police probe revealed that the email was sent from Pakistan. This confirmed that his last location was in Pakistan. His parents tried calling his Facebook friends but they never spoke to them. How they accessed to his email and Facebook accounts is altogether a different story, but that’s how they too built up a story. If parents are to be believed, then, they turned on his computer, they found his Facebook and email account open. Looking into those for clues, they discovered what had happened. Some even allege that his visit to Pakistan is pre-planned with an agenda and that was beautifully covered by his agents in the enemy country. Well, after knowing her son’s location, his mother Fauzia filed the writ of Habeas Corpus in April 2014 with the help of Abdul Rauf Rohilla, district governor of the Pakistan Rotary Club Midtown. She also got in touch with a Pakistan-based journalist who travelled to the area from where her son had gone missing. She spoke to the people whom he had befriended over Facebook. She also met the father of the woman for whom her son travelled to Pakistan. The father told her that his daughter was married to another person but refused to share her contact details.
2018-12-18Omie Kalani – The 2019 poster boy for BJP - Afternoon Voice
Omie Kalani – The 2019 poster boy for BJP December 18, 2018 Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2014 electoral campaign raised his voice for clean governance in the nation and criminal-free party. On the other hand, the recent aggressive campaign has created a speculation that Omie Kalani would be the prime campaigner of BJP in 2019. His political failures forced him to start his own party Team Omie Kalani (TOK) which is merely a campaigner group. If previous records are referred, the junior Kalani is seen randomly campaigning for NCP, Republican Party of India (RPI), sometimes Shiv Sena, and finally haltered at BJP because of his wife, Pancham Kalani’s position as Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation Mayor (BJP). During Modi’s daylong visit to Maharashtra on Tuesday, December 18, the posters spoke louder about his inclination towards the saffron party. The Ulhasnagar politics, and power corridors speculating that he would be the poster boy of Ulhasnagar for 2019. However, putting a full stop to all the speculation, BJP’s Saina NC said, “Ours is the only party which has never encouraged any criminals and will never do so and one to be rest assured by not getting carried away by the rumours.” Countering Saina NC, NCP leader Vidya Chavan said, “Amit Shah himself is a big gunda in the BJP. This party might be boasting about clean politics but they will never do so. There are 22-24 Ministers in Maharashtra with charges of corruption and Devendra Fadnavis is giving them all clean chits. They are taking in gundas, we are seeing this for the last four years.” In the same series of war of words, BJP MLA Atul Save told AV, “Modi Ji may not be even aware who is who; such people try to impose themselves on BJP whereas BJP is of very firm opinion that they won’t entertain such people. As far as posters are concerned, anyone can get it printed and if the said person is in politics, he knows how to make it to his advantage.” “I once again want to maintain that when PM comes for an event, people go in groups, click photos and boasts about their support or having proximity but it is just an illusion created by the people,” he added. Save further said, “Devendra Fadnavis is a no-nonsense CM of Maharashtra and by all means, he believes in clean politics and he already made sure that the tainted people will not be given any place here. As long as support is concerned, that depends on the supporter but not on the party.” Omie Kalani was not available for the quote but when our Editor-in-Chief spoke to NCP President and MLA of Ulhasnagar Jyoti Kalani, the mother of Omie Kalani and wife of Pappu Kalani asserted, “My daughter-in-law Pancham Kalani is with BJP and she is the Mayor of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. My son is a strong supporter of BJP. However, he is a member of his own political party Team Omie Kalani (TOK) but his party workers and he himself are supporting the saffron party and they will continue supporting it.” However, earlier Omie passed statement to the media that with the blessing of his father he has switched his support to the BJP. He also said, “We had a lengthy conversation and my father told me we had been Sharad Pawar loyalists for many years. I feel that times have changed and the BJP has emerged as the party of the masses. Ulhasnagar is a Sindhi-dominated area and voters have to choose between Pappu Kalani and the BJP. We want to end this dilemma and convey the message that Kalanis are with the BJP,” Kalani stated. Omie Kalani is reported to be an accused having several extortion cases and non-cognisable offences registered against him. A recent case of kidnapping and extortion of a Kalyan-based garment businessman Anil Kanjani (37) have been registered in the Kolsewadi police which came as a major embarrassment. The complainant has alleged in his complaint that he was kidnapped, threatened, and was abused to pay Rs 50 lakh to an Ahmedabad based businessman, Nilesh. Later, Kalani along with Suresh Lalwani and 12 other TOK (Team Omie Kalani) members took him to a hotel in Ulhasnagar where Kanjani was confined to a room and beaten up. Apart from that, they brandished knives and revolvers asking him to pay up Nilesh within two to three days. During 2017 Municipal Corporation election, two BJP local leaders, who have filed two attempts to murder cases against Omie Kalani, later withdrew their complaints. Both the leaders submitted their affidavit in the Kalyan session court stating that the cases registered by them against Omie are politically motivated ones. However, it seems to be a sudden shift of occasion when the TOK party President actively supports BJP on the social media while on the other hand, denies joining the party. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Husain Dalwai commented, “How can a person with criminal records allowed to meet Prime Minister? I don’t think he will be allowed to do so and if he is allowed to do so, it means that the police and the Home Department are not following the protocol. I don’t think he will ever be allowed to meet PM.” According to the media reports, earlier, Kalani and his 15 associates were booked in an attempt to murder case in 2011. Omie and his supporters allegedly beat up BJP Corporator Mahesh Sukhramani’s nephew Sunil with iron rods and sticks. Kalani is a family that dominates the politics of Ulhasnagar, which is also known as mini-Sindh. However, the family is also popular for having a vast criminal background. Jyoti Kalani, the mother of Omie Kalani and wife of Pappu Kalani, was arrested by the state crime investigation department in 2004 on various charges including forgery, non-payment of revenue and illegal liquor manufacturing. Jyoti had been the Mayor of Ulhasnagar after Pappu’s arrest under TADA in early 1990s.
2018-12-18Kalanis of Ulhasnagar — The wrong message for Modi’s Clean Politics claim - Afternoon Voice
Kalanis of Ulhasnagar — The wrong message for Modi’s Clean Politics claim December 19, 2018 uring 2014, addressing a rally at Hardoi while taking a line different from his development-oriented speeches, Narendra Modi said that he would flush out all the MPs with criminal antecedents from the Parliament and in the process, he won’t even spare those from either BJP or the NDA. Those days, his attack was on Congress and the NCP candidates. Modiji used to call NCP a “National Corrupt Party”. Later on, for his party’s survival, the tainted Ministers with money and muscle power were not only given place in BJP but they were rewarded with prominent portfolios in the state politics. BJP Corporator Pancham Kalani became the youngest Mayor of Ulhasnagar with the support of her husband Omie Kalani, who runs his own party called Team Omi Kalani (TOK). The 29-year-old Pancham is the third member of the powerful Pappu Kalani family to occupy the post. In the past, Pappu, who is Pancham’s father-in-law, and Jyoti, Pancham’s mother-in-law, has held the post. Pancham’s husband, Omie, played a key role in getting her elected unopposed. During the 2014 elections, Congress and NCP shrunk in the state, those days many NCP leaders chose to switch their loyalties to BJP, but the old Kalanis remained in NCP while Omie Kalani formed his own party but stood with BJP and in return, BJP gave membership to his wife. Modi might claim anything but no wonder that it has evidently been a case of the pot calling the kettle black as Congress, NCP, and BJP parties have fielded candidates with criminal records. Modi earlier said that he would form the panel to shortlist the MPs with criminal records on the basis of affidavits they have submitted before the Election Commission. After checking the genuineness of the cases, the government will knock the doors of the Supreme Court and urge the court to proceed with cases against these MPs following which they would be put behind the bars. He boasted that he has decided to cleanse the politics of the country after May 16, 2014. Modi said that the democracy of the country would not progress if the politics of the country were not made crime-free. Taking a dig at the opposition, Modi said that those who have been indulging in the politics of crime, will not be able to cleanse the system. A dreaded criminal and NCP leader Pappu Kalani were in jail for his criminal activities, his wife had many cases, his son Omie Kalani’s nomination was cancelled by the Election Commission because Omie has three sons and one from his first wife. Candidates with more than two kids are not allowed to contest. The Commission rejected Omie’s reply saying that his first child was from his former wife. Omie’s second wife Pancham Kalani, a first-time contestant, got a green signal from the Election Commission because she had two children. Omie Kalani is the son of the former MLA and gangster Pappu Kalani, arrived at an election rally brandishing a sword, evoking memories of his father, who is a gangster-turned-politician from Ulhasnagar who was booked under TADA charges in early 1990 and is currently on bail. Pappu Kalani had 34 criminal cases against him and also had links with the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in the past. Omie Kalani seems to be following his father’s footsteps. Kalani had recently declared that his candidates, under the banner of Team Omie Kalani, would alone hold 30 seats. While his mother Jyoti is a sitting MLA on NCP’s ticket from Ulhasnagar, there was talk that Kalani was going to enter in an alliance with the BJP. BJP Minister of State Ravindra Chavan confirmed that Team Omie Kalani would be supported by BJP. Pappu Kalani’s formal name is Suresh Budharmal Kalani and Pappu may be a nickname, though he prefers it as a part of the formal name, writing Suresh (Pappu) Budharmal Kalani in his election papers. He is currently on bail in 19 cases including eight of murder and was most recently elected as the MLA for Ulhasnagar from the Republican Party of India (Athavale) in the Maharashtra state assembly elections, 2004. Pappu Kalani served a life sentence on December 3, 2013, in a 23-year-old murder case of Ghanashyam Bhatija. Ghanashyam Bhatija was murdered on February 27, 1990, near the Pinto Resorts in Ulhasnagar of Thane district. His brother Inder Bhatija, who had seen the murder, was also shot dead on April 27, 1999, despite having police protection. Born into a wealthy family, Pappu Kalani’s uncle Dunichand Kalani was the president of the local unit of Indian National Congress. The family ran a liquor business and owned a number of distilleries and hotels. In the 1970s, Ulhasnagar was a booming lawless town settled by entrepreneurial refugees who had emigrated from Sindh, Pakistan, after the Partition of India in 1947. Sharp business practices combined with illegal construction and unauthorised industrial units made for an atmosphere where “protection” emerged as a profitable business. A number of gangs were soon working under the patronage of political parties. Pappu Kalani’s uncle Keemat Kalani, also affiliated with the Congress party, ran the gang headed by Chiman Tejwani while the opposing parties, under politician Gop Behrani, employed the gang of Govind Vachani and Gopal Rajwani. It is reported that both gangs were connected to the Dawood Ibrahim gang. Use was also made of the media and hush money was regularly paid to journalists. In 1983, Gopal Rajwani was for a while aligned with Pappu Kalani and they executed the brutal knife murder of the Editor A V Narayan of Blitz magazine. Rajwani was arrested for this, but he was eventually acquitted due to the lack of witnesses and shoddy prosecution. Nothing came out of this dastardly murder, however, as the Indian press never stood up against this criminal. In 1986, Pappu Kalani was elected the president of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Council (UMC), and the same year, he was chosen by the Indian National Congress party as its candidate for the state legislature from Ulhasnagar, and easily won the seat. Meanwhile, Gopal Rajwani and Pappu had fallen out over the division of extortion money. In April 1985, Rajwani was arrested in an extortion case, apparently at Kalani’s bidding. As Rajwani was being escorted to the police station in a rickshaw, Kalani arranged for his men to attack him with bombs and guns. Rajwani survived the attack and eventually relocated to Dubai, with the help of Haji Mastan, a notorious smuggler and senior don of that time. In April 1989, Pappu’s uncle Dudhichand Kalani was murdered, allegedly by the Govind Vachani/Gopal Rajwani gang, at the instance of Gop Behrani. This led to reprisal killings – as many as 22 murders in five months. It was during this period that Pappu Kalani emerged as the leader of his own organised crime gang. And now his next generation is carrying the legacy, which is happily supporting BJP — some being part of the party and some being independent.

2018-12-16PMRDA pushes for walk to work policy - Times of India
PMRDA pushes for walk to work policy Dec 17, 2018, 00:01 IST Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has pushed for walk to work policy by relaxing rules for non-polluting industries within 5 km radius of the corporation limits. The policy, which had been pending for the last 20 years, was amended in the recently released development control rules framed by the state government. According to the planners, the aim is to have offices within the region to save commuting time of people. “This was a long pending demand and, as per the industrialisation policy, no industries could come up within 5 km area of civic limits. Finally, the government has agreed to our proposal,” said PMRDA metropolitan planner Vivek Kharwadkar. He said that because of this policy industries came up beyond 5 km radius, and it made it difficult for people to reach their work places. “We have proposed the walk to work policy in our Development Control Regulations (DCR), which has been accepted by the government. Commercial and residential spaces will be allowed within 5 km radius, which will help people reach their work places in less time without any hassle,” stated the officials. Promoting non-polluting industries would help with the PMR having lined up Metro, ring road and town planning schemes. Officials stated that the town planning schemes at Mhalunge and those planned along the proposed ring road would have commercial places and industries within the town planning scheme. “The concept of having IT offices far from the city is an old concept. Consider Magarpatta city, where people reside and walk to work with many IT establishments having come up in the area,” said another PMRDA official. Once the proposal is in place, the rate of the land will be 20 per cent over and above the ready reckoner rates. The industries would have to get NOC from labour commissioner and they should be non-polluting industries. Earlier, the Maharashtra government’s new IT policy had proposed integrated IT townships. The new DC rules envisage the same.

The 20-year-old, a nursing student at a Navi Mumbai-based college, was headed to a Bhandup hospital where she had been interning for almost three months. “She left home as usual around 10 am on Thursday and boarded a CSMT-bound fast local around 10.15 am from Ulhasnagar. As the train picked up speed, she reportedly lost her balance and fell on the tracks,” said Raju Thate, Suradkar’s cousin. “At around 12 noon, the GRP called her mother and informed her that her daughter was injured in a railway accident. But when we reached the spot, we were told that she was no more,” added Thate. Suradkar’s father Jagjivan, 47, works as a security guard while her mother Sharada is a vegetable seller. “We were all waiting for her to finish her internship so that she could help out her poor parents who are struggling to make ends meet. Her younger brother who is in Class X is heartbroken as she always helped him in his studies,” said Thate. When contacted, Dinkar Pingale, senior police inspector, GRP Kalyan, said, “We have already registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter. Prima facie it seems that she fell from an overcrowded train.” According to a senior official, when the GRP team arrived at the site, Suradkar was found lying beside the tracks in an unconscious condition. They rushed her to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar where she was declared brought dead by the on-duty doctor. According to the police, there was a major injury around her head. “She would always tell me don’t worry papa. Very soon, I will start earning and ease your burden…,” said Jagjivan as he broke down in a fit of tears. As per data, around 654 people died while 1,434 others were injured in train accidents. “Local trains have a seating capacity of around 1,200 passengers and an equal number can stand. However, during peak hours, around 5,500 to 6,000 passengers travel in the train at a given time which increases risks of falls. The railways should either increase passenger capacity by starting 15-coach trains or increase the frequency or both,” said Samir Zaveri, a railway activist. We were waiting for her to finish her internship so that she could help out her poor parents who are struggling to make ends meet. Raju Thate, Sanjana's cousin.

2018-12-14Forensic facial reconstruction helps solve murder - Mumbai Mirror
Forensic facial reconstruction helps solve murder Updated: Dec 14, 2018, 11:59 IST Forensic facial reconstruction helps solve murder.Using forensic facial reconstruction technology, the Ambernath police solved a murder that took place in April this year over extra-marital relations. According to the police, they had found a beheaded body of an unidentified man estimated to be in his thirties at an isolated spot near village Jasvai in Ambernath on April 10. "On 10th of April, 2018, we had found the body. Around 500 metres away, we had found the skull of the man which was completely destroyed and the skin was completely removed. His face had been disfigured,” said Kashinath Chavan, senior police inspector of Ambernath police station. The police then, after discussing the case with senior officials, tried to trace the victim. But despite checking all the missing complaints, they could not get any links to the case. "We finally met senior doctors in KEM hospital - Dr Harish Pathak, head of forensic department and Dr Hemlata Pandey, Dr Manoj Parchake and Dr Shashank Tyagi, who are all from the forensic department of the hospital," he added. The doctors then worked on the face and with the help of anthropometry measurement, were able to assess the size, shape and composition of the victim’s face. Additionally, with the size of the skull, they were able to measure the nose, ears, lips and forehead. They used plaster of paris and clay to make a replica of the head and create a 60 per cent replica of the victims face. “After we got the 3-D Image by the doctors, we made several pamphlets of the image and stuck the posters at various locations in Kalyan, Ambernath and Ulhasnagar to get a clue about the victims identity,” said Chavan. After the police stuck the posters, they got their first clue when an informant called them, claiming that a person who stayed near him matched the face and was missing since April. “We came to know that the person’s name was Bindresh Prajapati when we met his wife Savitri. She told us that her husband Bindresh had gone for work to Bangalore,” said Pramod Shewale, DCP, Ulhasnagar division. The police then, with the help of the Call Details Record (CDR), picked up another person identified as Kisankumar Kanojiya, who was continuously in touch with Savitri. When the cops interrogated him, he finally confessed to the crime. “He told us that he had an affair with Bindresh's wife Savitri. Bindresh had recently come to know about the affair. So he (Kanojiya) and his friend Rajesh Yadav took Bindresh for drinks. After drinks, when Bindresh was too drunk, they allegedly killed him by stabbing him and later disfigured his face. They took his head 500 metres away and threw it there so that nobody could identify him,” said Shewale. Later, they even asked Savitri to not lodge a missing complain but tell people, who inquired about Bindresh, that he had gone to Bangalore for work. “We have arrested all the three and have got police custody of the three till 18th of December,” said Chavan. The three accused used to work as private employees in small factories.
2018-12-14Environment ministry rejects Maharashtra government’s plan to cut Matheran eco-sensitive zone - Hindustan Times
Environment ministry rejects Maharashtra government’s plan to cut Matheran eco-sensitive zone The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) planned to redraw boundaries of the Matheran Eco-sensitive Zone (ESZ) in its Regional Plan, which proposed to change the land use of some portions of the hill station and use it to develop restaurants, recreational facilities, and film and allied production activities. Updated: Dec 14, 2018 14:39 IST The ministry of environment and forests has turned down the state government’s plan to reduce areas marked as eco-sensitive zones in Matheran, and use the land to build townships, educational institutes and a film studio, among other things. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) planned to redraw boundaries of the Matheran Eco-sensitive Zone (ESZ) in its Regional Plan (RP), which proposed to change the land use of some portions of the hill station and use it to develop restaurants, recreational facilities, and film and allied production activities. However, it needed the environment ministry’s approval to change land use terms as Matheran — which lies in the ecologically diverse western ghats and is full of rich, semi-evergreen forests — was notified as an ESZ in 2003. There can be no development activities or hazardous industries in areas categorised as ESZs. With the ministry turning down the proposal, MMRDA officials said the state government would have to prepare a separate proposal to reduce the Matheran ESZ. For now, MMRDA has no plans to do so, officials said. “We proposed a revision in the ESZ boundary based on current forest cover,” an MMRDA official said. “The ESZ was notified in 2003, and the data used then was from 1995. The forest cover had reduced by 2016, and therefore, a change was proposed. The MoEF wrote to the state asking it to keep the boundaries of the ESZ as it were,” the official added. MMRDA oversees development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which includes Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi- Nizamapur, Vasai-Virar, Mira-Bhayandar, Ambernath, Kulgaon-Badalapur, Matheran, Karjat, Panvel, Khopoli, Pen, Uran, and Alibaug. It also looks after more than 1,000 villages in the Thane and Raigad districts. The MMRDA’s Regional Plan 2016-2036 was for the entire region, excluding areas government by municipal bodies. In the draft development control regulation for MMR 2016-2036, MMRDA “revised” the boundary of the Matheran ESZ “based on updated information from the forest department”. In its regional plan, MMRDA proposed changing the land use from Green Zone to Institutional Zone. Following the ministry’s instructions, the urban development department issued a notification approving a zonal master plan for the Matheran Eco-sensitive Zone. “The comments made by the MoEF in the minutes of a meeting were incorporated in their request, the changes have been made and a notification has been issued,” said Nitin Kareer, principal secretary, urban development departments. The zonal master plan will come into effect from February 6, 2019. The hill station covers an area of 214.73sqkm and has a 200m buffer zone. Matheran’s resident population is 4,393, according to the 2011 census. Debi Goenka, executive trustee, Conservation Action Trust, said, “The ESZ comes under the environment protection act; whereas MMRDA is an organisation that builds infrastructure and is interested in commercial activities. The plan was prepared to accommodate builders while pretending to be environmentally friendly. The Institutional Zone was slipped in saying that there is a need for colleges and hospitals. It [ministry’s decision] is a welcome decision.”
2018-12-14'Ma Baker's dozen' arrested in Thane for duping people of cash, jewellery - Daily News & Analysis
'Ma Baker's dozen' arrested in Thane for duping people of cash, jewellery Updated: Dec 14, 2018, 06:10 AM IST A gang of 13 thugs, who would engage people in conversation, suggest religious remedies to change their fortune before scamning them of their money and jewels, has been arrested. The Thane police has also recovered 661 gram gold and cash worth Rs 20 lakh from them. Since the month of June, the cops came across many cases where pedestrians were robbed by men as yet unidentified who would often involve them into a conversation. Some of the thieves pretended to be astrologers and conveniently predicted that their victims, who were mostly senior citizens, were going through one difficulty or another. At least twelve gullible citizens fell prey to their hoax, the police said. "They would suggest the victims a remedy for their misfortune. They would take them to a nearby temple apparently to perform a small puja. They would ask them to remove all gold jewellery and walk 50 steps without looking back," said a cop from Thanenagar police station where 12 such cases were registered of a total of 32 across the far suburbs. "When the victims looked back after 50 steps, the thugs would be gone," he said. The culprits often worked in pairs. They would talk to the senior citizens visiting ATMs to withdraw cash. And when they were not executing the temple ritual scam, they would sometimes manage to hand the victim fake currency notes before making an escape. Various police stations in Thane have received 32 such cases of cheating and chain-snatching and the Thane cops formed four teams to nab the perpetrators. Through technical analysis, they managed to catch 13 who are from Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Dombivli and even Gujarat. Their names are Raj Shetty and Rameshkumar Jaiswal, Sanjay Mahangade from Mumbai, Vilas Dalvi, Dinesh Suradkar from Ulhasnagar, Mohammed Asif Mohammed Rafiq from Ambivli, Sharbon Islam from Mumbra, Shankar Murugehan from Dombivli, Pradip Patil from Kalyan, Krishnakumar Singh from Mulund, Arjun Salat and Arjun Marwadi from Gujarat. 2018-12-11Speed-boat expenses allowed in hands of actor Akshaye Khanna - Times of India
Speed-boat expenses allowed in hands of actor Akshaye Khanna Dec 11, 2018, 08:51 IST MUMBAI: The rich and the famous who are flocking to Alibaugh, stand to benefit from a recent Income-tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) given in the case of actor Akshaye Khanna. Many of them use a speed boat and in two hours or less find themselves in an idyllic setting. A contrast with the traffic jam in Mumbai. If it can be proved that the speed boat is utilised for professional purposes, a sizeable portion of the expenses (a miniscule amount say 25% would be treated as personal expenditure) can be claimed as a deduction from income. Mind you, salaried employees would not be entitled to such deduction. But professionals such as doctors, tax consultants, advocates, actors who have set up a second home in Alibaugh will be allowed such a deduction from their income, reducing the amount that would be taxable. For the financial year 2011-12, the Income-tax (I-T) authorities disallowed an expenditure of Rs. 9.22 lakh and added it back to the actor’s income. For this year, Khanna had declared an income of Rs105.30 lakh in his I-T return. The component added back comprised of depreciation of Rs. 7.53 lakh and insurance of Rs. 1.69 lakh. Khanna contended before the ITAT that a creative part of his professional work including reading, evaluating stories and scripts, acting practice, speech improvements, story sessions etc was carried out in his farm house at Alibaugh and it was very convenient to use the speed-boat than any other mode of transport as he could travel from Walkeshwar, Mumbai to Alibaugh in minimal time. The I-T authorities had rejected this claim on the ground that the actor could not demonstrate with verifiable evidence that the speed boat was actually used for professional activities and not personal purposes. The ITAT took into consideration the fact, the actor had on his own, treated 25% of the expenditure related to the speed boat to be personal in nature. In its order dated December 5, the ITAT allowed the expenditure claimed in the tax return – holding it to be akin to any similar expenditure, such as of a motor car. Tax experts point out that in similar cases, the taxpayer will have to demonstrate that Alibaugh was actually a site used for professional purposes and that the speed boat was a suitable mode of commute.

A senior police inspector from Thane commissionerate said, “We checked Gosavi’s Facebook profile and it was found that when he was with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena [MNS] he had passed derogatory comments against the party. The Union minister said he plans to meet Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding the failure of the state administration to provide him with adequate police cover. “Lack of security personnel led to the incident. The attacker got access to me. I think my popularity is growing and some people cannot handle it,” Athawale said. Man beaten up, detained for slapping Union minister Ramdas Athawale December 09, 2018 13:23 IST Union minister Ramdas Athawale was allegedly slapped by a man at a public event in Maharashtra's Ambernath town in Thane Saturday night, and the police have detained the 30-year-old man for attempting to slap him. The Republican Party of India (Athawale) chief was in Ambernath town to address a rally. Athawale had just got off the dais around 10.15 pm after delivering a speech on the Constitution when the incident happened, a police officer said. Pravin Gosavi, on the pretext of garlanding Athawale, allegedly tried to slap him, following which people overpowered him, beat him up and handed him over to the police. The minister of state for social justice and empowerment was not harmed as bystanders and police managed to foil Gosavi's attempt to assault him, the officer said. Athawale, meanwhile, blamed the police for the incident claiming it had failed to provide him adequate security. In a statement issued Sunday morning, Athawale said, “Police did not provide sufficient protection, that helped the assailant to target me. My popularity is growing and it may have resulted in a jealous person charging against me. I am going to meet chief minister of Maharashtra regarding the same.” Gosavi, who was first admitted to a hospital in Ulhasnagar town following the public beating, has been shifted to a state-run hospital in Mumbai, police said. “We have registered a case under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code. Gosavi has been detained and not arrested as yet,” said Ambernath police station inspector K.G. Chavan. While a probe was underway to ascertain why Gosavi had tried to attack the minister, a senior police officer said it could have been out of frustration for having been expelled from the RPI(A). “Gosavi's membership was terminated from the Republican Party of India (Athawale) a year ago for criminal activities as he was blackmailing people through RTI (Right to Information pleas),” P.P. Shewale, deputy commissioner of police (zone IV), Thane Police, told PTI. “He may have been frustrated over it (expulsion from party) and may have tried to manhandle the Union minister,” the DCP added. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The local RPI (A) unit has called for a shutdown in Ambernath on Sunday as a mark of protest. Athawale has asked his party workers to maintain peace in the wake of the incident. An officer said the situation in the town was calm and under control, with a large posse of police personnel out on the streets to keep vigil. No untoward incident has been reported since morning, the officer added.

Gosavi is a former member of the RPI local youth wing. The police said that even his Facebook posts suggest that he was against Athavale’s decision to tie-up with the BJP. Athavale blamed inadequate police security for the incident and said he will meet the CM to discuss security concerns. He also appealed to partymen to maintain peace as RPI activists called for a bandh at Ambernath and Ulhasnagar city on Sunday. After addressing the rally organized by RPI and Sumedh Bhavar Foundation on Saturday, Athavale was walking towards his car, when Gosavi approached him with a bouquet of flowers and then tried to slap him. Partymen caught Gosavi and assaulted him. 2018-12-09Ulhasnagar: 8 children bitten by stray dog, activists draw attention of rights panel to menace - The Indian Express
Ulhasnagar: 8 children bitten by stray dog, activists draw attention of rights panel to menace On Saturday evening, the children, all residents of Samrat Ashok Nagar, were playing on the road. “Seeing the dog, the kids started to run, which made the dog chase them Published: December 10, 2018 4:00:10 am Eight children were bitten by a dog in Ulhasnagar on Saturday. They were attacked while playing on the road. The incident comes just days after activists pleaded that the State Human Rights Commission, which is conducting suo motu hearings about issues related to stray dogs in Ambernath and Badlapur, also consider the stray dog menace in Ulhasnagar. Advertising On Saturday evening, the children, all residents of Samrat Ashok Nagar, were playing on the road. “Seeing the dog, the kids started to run, which made the dog chase them. All eight suffered injuries on their legs. One of them, a nine-year-old, suffered several injuries as he fell down and the dog attacked his hands and torso,” said Pawan Sonigrahi, parent of one of the children. He said the Ulhasnagar Municipal Council (UMC) has been neglecting the stray dogs issue. “There are as many as 5,000 stray dogs, if not more, in the area and attacks by stray dogs has been on the rise,” said Satyajit Burman, who is part of the monitoring committee set up by the human rights commission. “The commission has been focusing on Ambernath and Badlapur areas, but on December 5, I requested them to make the UMC a party too,” he added. According to activists, the sterilisation of stray dogs has come to a standstill since late 2017. “There was a partner company which was doing sterilisation but then, due to lack of funds, they withdrew support. Since then, there has not been active sterilisation. Also, dogs from nearby regions are coming to Ulhasnagar due to various reasons such as lack of food and hostile territory. So, every few days we get complaints about aggressive dogs that attack humans,” said Soham Patekar, an animal rights activist in Ulhasnagar. But municipal authorities claimed this was a one-off incident and that the dog menace was under control. “We have a Hyderabad-based firm as the sterilisation partner and they have been rounding up the strays and sterilising them. There are many dogs, but we can’t send them anywhere. We are planning to set up awareness camps on dos and don’ts for people on how to deal with stray dogs,” a senior municipal officer said.

2018-12-08Suresh Pujari aide held for role in extortion racket - The Hindu
Suresh Pujari aide held for role in extortion racket UPDATED: DECEMBER 08, 2018 23:57 IST The Anti Extortion Cell of the Thane Police Crime Branch on Saturday arrested one of the oldest associates of fugitive gangster Suresh Pujari for allegedly aiding the latter’s extortion racket. According to Thane AEC officers, Mirchu Sharma (55), was arrested after he was picked up from his Ulhasnagar residence on Saturday. Received tip-off “We had received information about Mirchu’s activities and picked him up on the basis of the tip off. Inquiries have revealed that he would gather details about possible targets for extortion, like builders and businessmen, study their movements and get contact details, and pass them on to Pujari,” Senior Police Inspector Pradeep Sharma, Thane AEC said. Mr. Sharma said that Pujari is believed to have made several extortion calls based on the details provided by Mirchu. Believed to be one of Pujari’s oldest friends, Mirchu used to run a video parlour in Ulhasnagar before the gangster fled abroad. Mirchu had been arrested in 2015 by the Thane police for the alleged murder of a cable operator from Ulhasnagar, which was allegedly ordered by Pujari. Close associates Officers said that gangsters based out of the country depend on their close associates for information on targets for extortion. “These aides work locally and gather information about affluent people in their areas. They first keep a watch on their movements for a few days and also obtain their contact numbers, which are all passed on to their bosses. Subsequently, the gangsters make extortion calls and use the information about the daily routine of the targets to convince them that they were being watched and could be attacked at any time. The trick usually works and scares the targets into paying up,” a Crime Branch officer said. Pujari, who is believed to be abroad, has some 20 offences registered against him in the Thane district. In January this year Pujari allegedly sanctioned a hit on a Bhiwandi-based hotelier who refused to pay up the extortion money sought from him. The police went on to arrest four accused in connection with the attempt on the hotelier’s life.
2018-12-08Two years on, Ulhasnagar civic body yet to complete bridge over Waldhuni River - Hindustan Times
Two years on, Ulhasnagar civic body yet to complete bridge over Waldhuni River There are around 4,000 residents living Vadolgaon and most of them travel to Ulhasnagar city for work and other purposes. Updated: Dec 09, 2018 01:24 IST Vadolgaon villagers are still using a makeshift bridge made of stones and debris to cross the Waldhuni river and get to Ulhasnagar city because the civic body bridge is yet to be completed. There are 10 days left for the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) to complete the bridge it promised it would build. But only 90% of the work has been completed. In August, the Vadol Bridge Nagrik Sangharsh Samiti filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay high court (HC) after the UMC failed to complete and open the bridge to the public. After the HC pulled up the civic body, the latter filed an affidavit saying the bridge would be completed by December 15. “The civic body did not carry out any work in September due to rain. The work resumed in October but was carried out very slowly,” said Shivaji Ragde, a representative of Vadol Bridge Nagrik Sangharsh Samiti. “Now the civic body claims the work will be completed before the deadline. However, the bridge cannot be opened as the slab has been placed just two days ago and it requires at least a month to settle down. This means again we will have to wait until next year to use the bridge.” Earlier, a small bridge connecting the village to the city collapsed during heavy rains in 2016. The UMC started work on a new bridge but it faced several roadblocks. “It is very difficult to cross the river. We are forced to walk on the stones and debris which are dumped on the river. It is dangerous for our kids as they also cross the river to reach their schools in Ulhasnagar,” said Usha Pawar, 48, a resident of Vadolgaon. Last year, residents built a temporary bridge by placing wooden planks and cement pipes to cross the river but it too was washed away in the pre-monsoon showers this year. It was only after this that residents created the present bridge made of stones and debris. There are around 4,000 residents living Vadolgaon and most of them travel to Ulhasnagar city for work and other purposes. The only other way to reach their destination is an autorickshaw ride for about three to four kilometres, which few can afford. A bridge across the Waldhuni river would enable them to reach Ulhasnagar in a few minutes. Two years ago, when UMC started work on the bridge, the project cost was ₹2 crore. With the delay, it has now inflated to ₹4 crore. Ragde alleged these were corrupt tactics used by the civic body to siphon off a lot of money. “This is the reason why we approached the court. The contractors have been delaying the work without any reason and the civic body did not take any action on them,” added Ragde. An officer from UMC, requesting anonymity, said, “The work to complete the bridge is under progress. We have directed the contractors to carry out work late at night to meet the deadline. We had warned the contractors about the delay, because of which work has been sped up the past three months. It is near completion now.”
2018-12-07BJP may field Madhuri Dixit from Pune Lok Sabha seat - Times of India
BJP may field Madhuri Dixit from Pune Lok Sabha seat Updated: Dec 7, 2018, 09:23 IST MUMBAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is considering fielding Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit-Nene from the Pune Lok Sabha constituency in the 2019 general elections, party sources said. In June this year, BJP chief Amit Shah had met the actor at her residence in Mumbai during his party’s ‘Sampark for Samarthan’ (Contact for Support) programme and briefed her on the achievements of the Narendra Modi government. A senior state BJP leader told PTI on Thursday that her name has been shortlisted for the Pune Lok Sabha seat. “The party is seriously considering giving candidature to Madhuri Dixit in the 2019 general elections. We think the Pune Lok Sabha constituency will be better for her,” he said. “The party is in the process of finalising the list of probables for several Lok Sabha seats and Dixit's name has been shortlisted for the Pune Lok Sabha constituency...she is being seriously considered for it,” the leader said. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had snatched the Pune Lok Sabha seat from the Congress, with Anil Shirole winning by a margin of over three lakh votes. The 51-year-old actor has featured in many Bollywood films, including “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!”, “Dil To Pagal Hai”, “Saajan” and “Devdas”. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had snatched the Pune Lok Sabha seat from the Congress, with Anil Shirole winning by a margin of over three lakh votes. On the plans to field the actor, a senior BJP functionary said, “Such tactics were implemented by Narendra Modi in Gujarat when he became the chief minister for the first time. He changed all the candidates in local bodies election and the party reaped benefits of that decision.” “As fresh faces were introduced, there was nothing to criticise them with. It left the opposition shocked and the BJP won maximum seats and retained power,” he said. According to the leader, a similar experiment was also successfully carried out in Delhi local bodies polls in 2017, where all the sitting councillors were denied tickets. The BJP won the seats and retained the control, he said.

2018-12-02Muslims get burial ground in Ulhasnagar - Times of India
Muslims get burial ground in Ulhasnagar Dec 3, 2018, 02:55 IST ULHASNAGAR: The Muslim community's nearly 45-year wait for a burial ground in the city ended Saturday. Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation mayor Pancham Kalani handed documents for the plot to community representatives who had been on a protest for the past 123 days. "We are happy that within two months of taking over as mayor, Kalani has fulfilled our demands. We have finally got land and our community members will no more have to travel to other cities to bury their near and dear ones," said Akhlakh Khan, an activist who had been among those fighting for land. Till now, the community had to travel five km away to Ambernath or Kalyan to inter its dead. In all these years, UMC has reserved several plots for a burial ground, but either due to protests from locals over the allotted plot or pressure from builders, the civic body ended up changing reservation. In 2017, a social worker named Anil Kumar had cycled all the way to New Delhi to highlight this grievance. Meanwhile, the community held its first burial on the new ground in Ulhasnagar 1.

2018-12-0140 boys travelling alone from Bihar rescued from train - Times of India
40 boys travelling alone from Bihar rescued from train As many as 40 boys found travelling unescorted to Mumbai by Raxaul(Bihar)-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express were rescued by an NGO and Thane railway police early Saturday morning. Dec 2, 2018, 03:29 IST THANE: As many as 40 boys found travelling unescorted to Mumbai by Raxaul(Bihar)-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express were rescued by an NGO and Thane railway police early Saturday morning. Though it was suspected that all the boys, aged 12-15, were being brought to be pushed into child labour by a trafficking racket, 20 of them were sent home as their identities were established and relatives turned up on being alerted by railway police. The rest were sent to children homes at Ulhasnagar and Bhiwandi and will be brought before the Child Welfare Committee next week. According to the railway police, the NGO Pratham Railway Childline received a tip-off about nearly 40 children travelling unescorted aboard Raxaul-LTT Express. "Accordingly, our team and the NGO volunteers waited for the train to arrive at Thane station and searched every compartment. We found 40 boys travelling unescorted in small groups in different compartments. While 20 of them were found to have come down to Mumbai without any specific reason, the others gave details of their families or relatives here. As their families or relatives came here and identified them, we sent the boys with them," said an officer from Thane railway police. The railway police suspect the boys were escorted by traffickers tasked with sourcing minors from poor families to big cities with the lure of money to do odd jobs. It is believed the cartel would have helped these boys board the train at various stations enroute and an aide in Mumbai would have come to pick them. Police said they will investigate the matter after a case is registered. Before Saturday, 31 boys rescued from the same train this year, police sources said. Farida Lambey, co-founder of NGO Pratham, said a case under the Labour Act or the Juvenile Justice Act (care and protection) could be slapped against those who brought these boys to the city.
