RPI breaks alliance with BJP, joins hands with Shiv Sena Pradeep Gupta | TNN | Jan 31, 2017, 05.27 PM IST ULHASNAGAR: In a major setback to the recently formed UDA (Ulhasnagar Development Alliance), one of its political party RPI (Republican Party of India) walked out of the alliance and joined hand with Shiv Sena. The UDA came into existence on Sunday after the BJP and its state alliance RPI along with Team Omie Kalani announced their alliance for the forthcoming civic elections of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. It is for the first time that RPI broke alliance with the BJP and joined hands with Shiv Sena. On Tuesday RPI city president Bhagwan Bhalerao in a joint press conference with Shiv Sena leaders in Ulhasnagar declared breaking of alliance with BJP and announced their alliance with Shiv Sena for the upcoming UMC election.Holding press conference Bhalerao said that they walked out of the UDA because of the sudden entry of the Team Omie Kalani into the alliance which created confusion over seats sharing as initially RPI was given 13 seats but later Team Omie Kalani was trying to take more seats from the RPI quota. The Shiv Sena has assured RPI of giving 13 seats which they were earlier assured by the BJP. However, BJP leader Kumar Ailani said earlier RPI had four sitting corporators out of which two had left the party yet we were ready to give them assured seat but they left party over dispute on one seat.

2017-01-30Thane: Gangster's son brings sword to election rally - Mid-Day
Thane: Gangster's son brings sword to election rally By Faisal Tandel Posted 30 minutes ago Omi Kalani brandishes a sword as he is carried into the venue on the shoulders of supporters. Pic/Navneet Barhate Omi Kalani, son of former MLA and gangster Pappu Kalani, seems to be following in his father's footsteps, the Ulhasnagar strongman arrived at an election rally on Saturday brandishing a sword, evoking memories of his father Pappu, who is currently in jail for murder. Sources who were present there claimed that this was all for publicity. However, the stunt could soon turn out to be a double-edged sword for Kalani, as the election commission is investigating a viral video that shows him wielding the sword as he was carried in on the shoulders of supporters. Alliance with BJP: Kalani had recently declared that his candidates under the banner of Team Omi Kalani' — alone would hold 30 seats. While his mother Jyoti is a sitting MLA on NCP's ticket from Ulhasnagar, there was talk that Kalani was going to enter an alliance with the BJP. BJP Minister of State Ravindra Chavan confirmed this Saturday's rally at Gol Maidan in Ulhasnagar 1, jointly held by the BJP, RPI (A) and Team Omi Kalani. At the rally as well, the focus seemed to be on Kalani. There was also an LCD screen at the venue with information on the work he had done in the past, but no mention of the work done by BJP or RPI (A). EC probe: Vijaya Jadhav, the Election Commission official responsible for enforcing the Model Code of Conduct in Ulhasnagar, said, "We have not received any report from officials about this. I have to ask the concerned officials regarding the same. However, we will see the video and check how the sword was used and whether it has violated the code of conduct." Copspeak: A senior officer from Ulhasnagar police station said, "The Election Commission officers were present in the public rally too, and would have notice the incident, of which a video went viral." Deputy Commissioner of Police Sunil Bharadwaj (Ulhasnagar) said, "The Election Commission didn't report the video or the use of the sword to us. First we have to check whether it was a real sword or just a prop for shock value." Like father, like son? Pappu Kalani is a gangster-turned-politician from Ulhasnagar who was booked under TADA charges in early 1990 and is currently serving a life sentence in Yerawada jail for the murder of political activist Ghanashyam Bhatija. Pappu Kalani had 34 criminal cases against him and also had links with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in the past.

While the police had arrested one person immediately after the FIR was registered, five others, including three lawyers and a mother-daughter duo, had not been arrested. Currently, the police are in the process of gathering evidence against the accused.Vitthalwadi Police Sub Inspector (PSI) C Khuspe who is investigating the case said, “The five accused have applied for anticipatory bail before the sessions court in Kalyan. The hearing took place today and the order is expected in the next few days. Till then, the accused have relief from arrest.” While the police have three witnesses testifying in favour of the victim, all three are linked to the victim. So the police are also looking for independent witnesses to prove the case. The incident is alleged to have taken place from September 19 till mid-December last year when the 45-year-old victim was employed at the residence of the accused persons, five of whom are part of the same family. In her statement, she said on September 19, she saw a female family member behave in an inappropriate manner and informed the matriarch of the house. This infuriated the family members, including the matriarch, who then allegedly locked her in a room where she was raped by two of the accused. In her statement, she added that when she stopped working, two of the accused would come to her house and rape her. After she told her family, they set up a video camera in her house, and after capturing one of the accused come to her house, she approached the Vitthalwadi police with a video recording in December. An FIR was registered on December 27 and one of the family members seen in the footage, Ganesh More, was placed under arrest.
